Honestly, it's something common to most poor people in the world and I genuinely think it's to do with a scarcity of chairs. If you are not used to people being able to afford chairs then you get used to sitting like that, and the you don't meet to sit on surfaces any longer. Us more civilised, developed nations are possibly too used to chairs, and we now feel we need them.
