North Dakota is expensive as fuck but you would think about it. Other than Grand Forks, a commuter airport, and an AFB, aint shit there either. The oil/shale business is big there and with all the money flat flows from that industry is reflected in the cost of living. What should be an $80,000 shit house and mortgage is $220,000 and the land aint worth a damn.
I was stationed in Little Rock, AR for 7 years, relocating from Southern California, and loved it; surprisingly. Low cost of living, good schools(in the greater area), good BBQ, nice family home will run you around $120,000, and everyone was very friendly. Lots of hunting and fishing. One of my favorite passtimes was waking up early before work and having a cup of coffee and cigarette on the back porch, listening to the hunters at dawn.
The demographics are mostly white outside of LR, so you don't have to worry about being shot by a nignog. Just about everyone I knew conceal carried so if a nig nog showed up, it was swiftly handled in the best way possible: 2 hollow points in the chest.
Not everyone liked it there. There is always some shit lord saying how much it sucked but if you like a slower pace of life but still want to have a city experience, it's just 20 minutes down the road.
The food and beer culture is also starting to take a foothold now, as well. Besides the BBQ and fried chicken, there is a plethora of new restaurants coming in to the area with some awesome stuff.
I'm in Delware right now, which isn't bad, but I have a cocksucker of a boss who makes me count the days until im out of the military. When I'm out, I'm headed back to Arkansas and thats where I plan on staying and retiring.
