Ok, I'd reccomend Vaults of Terra and Bruva Alfabusa's "If the Emperor had a text to speech device". Vaults of Terra gives more factual stuff, Bruva's is just straight-up funny for me.
If you want nore reading stuff, I use Lexicanum and 1d4chan wiki for it, for pretty much the same reasons.
Also if you want good IG books the Ciaphas Cain series is great, and for Inquisiton go for Dan Abnett's Eishenhorn and Ravenor series. All fantastic books.
And just remember, chose the Imperium otherwise you're a filthy heretic.
Someone is actually interested in Warhammer 40k, First off read the timeline on the wiki, and then just buy the books so GW can rape your wallet.

One thing about the warhammer universe that's probably there for gameplay reasons that annoys me about these universes is that there's almost no R&D for new tech and what they do know is horribly insufficient, same with the Brotherhood of Steel from the fallout series, preserving isn't enough, Advancements need to be made to have any hope of surviving, I'd probably be a Gue`vesa because the Tau seem to be the only forward thinking conglomerate
Read Gaunt's Ghosts, play Space Marine/DoW and check out Vaults of Terra; that's my recommended starter kit. I've been playing since 3rd edition and it is a great game and lore.

From what I can tell The Inquisition is a race that falls under the Empire
But the GW store has very few unique Inquisition models
So what troops make up the non elite units for the Inquisition? Imperial gaurds? space marines? grey knights?

Read some Gaunt's Ghosts, currently waiting on The Warmaster (latest book). Most of what I've read didn't really offer insight into the daily life of a Guardsman without being so grimdark and depressing, although it does get sad towards the end. Dan Abnett in general is a good writer at that kind of thing. You should also read some Eisenhorn and read up on the Warhammer wiki. Personally I started out with the Gaunt's Ghosts omnibus and started reading up on other works (Last Chancers, Eisenhorn, Ciaphas Cain)

the inquisition has relatively few "chambers militant", elite armed forces that an inquisitor can call upon when the threat is greatest. the grey knights for the ordo malleus, the sisters of battle for the ordo hereticus, and the deathwatch for the ordo xenos. These are extremely elite troops though, trained to fight each orders specific enemy and as such are used pretty sparingly. to compensate for this the inquisitors have the authority to recruit any imperial armed forces to their cause that they deem it requires. of course the normie troops are normally summarily executed afterwards to avoid them becoming corrupted.

To me it's easier to draw your audience when you can help relate the reader to the character's situation. What better way to do that than to talk about the trivial life a single Guardsman? Your regiment is just one of many in the galaxy that is made up of men from all walks of life. Let's say your regiment has just been recently founded and have yet to encounter all the horrors of the universe with nothing but a flashlight and some cardboard armor (although PDF have it worse). When I see Imperial Guard art with lots of soldiers fighting and dying it draws me more because it makes you wonder about each man's individual struggle against the vast galaxy

If you want a really good story set in the universe, I recommend Cadian Blood, story about a badass group of soldiers running around killing shit on a world covered in plague. Doesn't tell you too much about the lore but it is a kick ass novel. Also if you want a longer series the Word Bearers has 3 books running in it, I'm about half way through the first one and it it pretty kick ass so far.
