I actually wrote a paper about that last semester, Barack Obama recently signed the Space Resource Exploration and Utilization Act of 2015 that basically allows any American citizen to extract resources from extraterrestrial bodies, and in particular asteroids.
Asteroids contain a huge amount of water, which can be easily split through electrolysis into liquid hydrogen, which in turn can be used as rocket propellant. Not to mention that typical asteroids contain a huge amount of platinum, making space travel profitable.
There are already two major companies in America that have already invested millions, if not billions, in asteroid mining technologies and managed to land a probe capable of extracting resources on an asteroid.
