Don't fall for this flowery shit. You could just as easily say "stardust eating and then shitting itself" over the course of what humans refer to as time.

I believe you are referring to sentience. Few animals have that. Apes, elephants, whales, and some birds. Everything else is only as aware as much as it takes to survive. They don't contemplate the universe and their place in it.

Sentience is the product of a mind capable of a higher reasoning ability using that ability to explain it's own existence to itself.

Wrong question, son. 'Consciousness' is a linguistic term. You should be asking what people mean, when they say something like 'I am aware of something'.

so here's my question: I basically ascribe to the idea that consciousness is the integration of neuronal sensory input pathways that give rise to some form of self.

However, where exactly does consciousness exist? because it isn't exactly physical. Yes I understand how hearing, vision etc work but the subjective experience of that exists in some sort of of semi-physical realm. Same goes for the experience of thoughts. Try and pin down exactly where a thought exists. You can't quite do it, you can see that it rises from the the neural pathways in your brain but the subjective experience of thoughts are in a different realm all together.

I dunno i think about this alot.

Let me explain to you the nature of the universe... Time is an illusion and all of eternity is happing right now. There is only one moment and it's eternal. A lot of people think that having a conscience means being an observer but it is actually more complex than that. We can't understand the entirety of the universe, just as a single or group of cells can't understand how the enitire system of our body and minds work.
>>

>Time is an illusion and all of eternity is happing right now

this, but kind of

time exists, in the sense that it is the relationship between matter, space and movement and that in order to experience that there needs to be an observer.

However, if you remove the observer, there is just eternity, moving constant eternity. memory is funny because although like all matter it only exists in the present the brain gives the ability to reflect on past events (ie the location, movement etc of matter) How accurate that memory is may be up for debate.

So, we know some level of complexity is required for consciousness. Lump of coal isn't conscious, humans are. But it seems like animals are conscious too, so complexity of a human isn't required. Other much simpler animals like rodents, birds, etc seem to be able to experience pain, pleasure, etc.

And we know that complexity alone isn't enough. Our computers have more memory than we do and more raw processing power than our brains have, and they can "experience" a lot more information than we can. But yet they don't appear to have any care one way or another about their "experience", they are just circuits banging electrical pulses around.

There's some physical mechanism in there we haven't figured out. It's not magic. It's science like anything else that exists in reality. We just have to find that mechanism, figure out how to isolate it, build it, study it, examine it.

Until we do that, we're just guessing.

Well, that's the philosophy. A computer is basically an artificial brain and our brain are biological computers. The two can merge and become neohuman. A computer doesn't have free will, you have to tell it what to do. Quantum mechanics in a way are a fundamental law that defines free will.

Sorry mate, it's just a biological collection of memory coding, illusive free will, and sensory input. It doesn't mean much. It will die along with your body. However, if there are any odds of it being revived, no matter how stellar they may be, it is guarenteed to happen, as time and space are infinite.

I'd ask the question more along the lines of, what is the Thetan?

Consciousness? It's Passion and Intensity, a fusion of what we call life, and the chemicals that make up our emotions. It isn't just "Being", anything can "Be", but can you really say they're in control? It isn't the voice inside your head, that is part of it. It isn't something as insipid as love, anon. It is Passion and Intensity, a fusion that catapults us towards death, and the mystique we adore with those who share our "lives". It is our sense of wonder and our natural drive to do. Awareness? Would you call a cockroach concussions? No, but why? it is aware, but it isn't aware of it's own existence, just of Run, Hide, Eat, Shit, Repeat.

Passion and Intensity

That's precisely the problem. It's more of a feeling than an idea. But it's a fleeting feeling that is usually just out of my reach. It's what sparks existential thoughts and such. I've wondered if maybe I'm just depressed looking for happiness again.

We are the only model for consciousness we have, so that is our definition of consciousness, what we experience. We then look at our aims, and the first one is to survive as long as possible. We want to have power. We want to have love. Our vision of God is basically that: immortal, powerful, loved. Our consciousness is striving to be like God, our imagined vision of consciousness perfected. If we don't go extinct, we might get there.
>>
>>673818893
technically. the term man created for something they didnt fully understand is just a thing. we cant fully comprehend consciousness because it is not a physical thing. its more spiritual. astral projection type of stuff i guess. it deserves these and so much more replies.

this is awesome. thank you anon. animals are conscious but only of the moment right? more as a survival mechanism. humans are aware of past, future, hypothetical, unbelievable and absolute. i could be horribly wrong of course. you seem like the one to ask.

rodents experiencing pain and pleasure is not necessarily consciousness. thats chemicals releasing and attaching to the right place for the right action/effect. like a computer.

computers is science. theres no spirit or soul. i agree its not magic, but its not a physical mechanism. i dont think we will ever find the mechanism if thats the reason for it. humans are contaminate everything. we'll abuse it. i rather find the answer to consciousness then be filthy rich though

All that is. Consciousness is the proof to an equation that covers the entirety of the universe and changes based on the input value time. All consciousness across all timelines is experienced subjectively but it is nonetheless the same universe entity.
What is consciousness to the observer? It is all around you. It is all that you are or ever will be. An unbroken experience- death is not an experience one can have, nor is the time before life. There is only ever the self. Everything that self perceives exists entirely in the mind as it manifests itself into a three-dimensional rendering around you. People assume that this is the outside world but every part of it is inside the mind. If we could step outside our minds and see the world the way it really was we would be horrified.

you are naive anon, but so am I. the answer is always available but we just wont know how to access it or even where to start looking for it. whose to say we even have the the correct answer? we're all wired differently. if you dont need drugs to achieve something that we do need drugs for, good for you. lets work together and figure the rest out. dont condemn them for not functioning the same way you do.

I think our perception of the world is entirely our own choice, so the very act of choosing to see negativity in the world creates it. That's not to say that we can play ignoramus and let the world descend into chaos at the hands of evil men. Instead I suggest that our perception of evil and fear is what we need to address. Not tyrants and other nasty characters.

What are your thoughts about strong AI and whether computers can also be conscious.
>>
>>673812683
I have felt what you felt. Its completely valid, I feel that your reality is scary because you have found through consciousness concepts that require your attention and understanding. We're essentially experiencing reality, we are creating it every moment, but at the same time we learn from ourselves and the outer world reveals these 'hidden truths' to us. This may sound like bullshit at first but the universe or your reality actually is a reflection of yourself at any given moment. Thats why people call life journies or whatever because its multiple entities experiencing eternity.
>>

badass anon. i wish i would have done that. i was always good at math so people automatically assumed i would major in engineering. i just went along with it. took philosophy 101 first year and learned we cant confirm anything but ourselves as real. just because we see and touch them doesnt mean its not a construct. i had that exact thought when i was going to disneyland looking at the cars on the freeway. how do i know theyre real and not just something created for me to believe i live in a world with other humans. as a kid i thought it was stupid and meant nothing. i had my eyes closed. i didnt take school serious and dropped out in 2 years or so. never did pass that philosophy 101 class. i love to learn and thats philosophy. i also question everything. how much longer till you get your masters?

>>
>>673837452

I'm not sure exactly what you mean about strong AI, so I'll briefly answer your second question.

I don't think computers can be conscious, if by conscious you mean sort of "as cognitively functional as a human." There's a practical expertise, a sort of embodied coping that humans and animals have that AI scientists haven't been able to remotely replicate. Source: took a seminar on embodied cognition, and another seminar on Heidegger (which had us read the Dreyfus/McDowell debate) last semester.

If by conscious you mean something like "self aware," then I also doubt it but have nothing really to offer as an argument.

I have. It's a funny joke.

I assume these are both you?

In regards to your first post, thanks bruv. I was never great at math, although I was decent at logic. That's a badass aptitude you've got there, and I wouldn't let go of it. I'm not saying become an engineer or anything, but there's enormous application in philosophy, abstract math, physics, and theoretical physics for people strong in math. Also, looks like you guys learned some Descartes! Despite how much shit he gets the Meditations were really extraordinary. If I stay on track I'll earn my masters in May of 2017.

In regards to the second post, by logically axiomatizing I mean translate every relation and principle of everything into a "formula of logic," so to speak. For example, Hilbert is credited with attempting to formulate the geometrical relations "in between," "is a point on a line," and others as formal logical propositions. It seems strange and trivial, like why does "in between" need to be made into a formula, but it's all done in pursuit of clarity and exactness.

nice. a lot of forests and fresh air there right? acid is great out in nature. ive been to the beach here on acid and it looked like the ocean had a diamond coated layer. on strong gusts of wind i could feel the earth breathing.

psychedelic drugs can trigger it, but only people who are ready for the experience will get it. it cannot be explained through words. it can also cause insanity but they say insanity and enlightenment are two sides of the same coin.

So how do we make it useful? Or is it just some kind of infinite cosmic game?
>>

Yes! My favorite thing to do is smoke a bit and go on long ass walks through the woods. Planning on doing either acid or more mescaline this coming summer. Hopefully a pasture or something open.

know that there is no difference between whats going on inside your head and whats going on outside of your world.

well it is a game in the sense that its playful and its pretty much awesome as fuck. just know that the way existence is set up, you have already experienced everything there is to experience infinite different ways and will continue to do so infinitely. so sit back and enjoy the ride :) live your life like if you were immortal

I know I'm pretty late to this thread but from what I've read here is many people believe consciences is a "thing" in our brain when really its more a less a process of our brain thinking. Humans have evolved from the simplest organisms to do one thing. Spread the genes. And through this process of evolution our brain was formed and tuned to adapt to our environment. And as a result of this we get the complex neuron connections generated in our brain from birth. When the switch is turned "on" the brain goes through a complex butterfly affect. One neuron triggering another neuron. And the unique position of every neuron placed by our evolved genes happen to give us the ability to think outside of the box. It's ridiculous that an evolutionary goal to spread genes gave us the unintentional capability to be conscience.

Try this on for size, OP:

What if our consciousness is derived from a higher self? What if we, as humans, don't exist in only three spacial dimensions, but the nature of our bodies binds us to an exclusive perception of three dimensions?

We believe the brain to be the source of our consciousness, or the source of our ability to think. But there's a lot we still don't know about the brain. What if we are conscious only because the brain is the only part of our body capable of interpreting the data being sent to us through our higher dimensional selves?

If you see a monitor in a room with a YouTube video playing, but can see no computer of any sort attached or plugged in to it, the most logical conclusion is that the computer is inside the monitor itself.

However, what if the computer's in another room and streaming over wifi or bluetooth to the tv? You'd have no way of knowing that to be the case, but it still would be.

And if the screen in destroyed and no longer shows any images, the computer doesn't stop playing the video; it just has no screen on which to show it.

Yes, I've come to that realization..

But idk.. There just seems to be something so... Planned about it. Like there is a goal.

yes ill just say theres a difference between believing it and actually knowing it. wisdom vs knowledge.
there is a plan. the goal is Perfection. evolution is not blind its driving itself towards perfection. the whole universe will one day be a single god knowing everything than there is nothing left to do and exhistence becomes boring because it knows everything. so there is only one thing left to do, divine suicide, the universe kills itself and resets the cycle, think big bang, and the god splits into infinite different parts (monads) which than drive themselves through evolution all in different ways like we are today.

i was good at math because you just follow a pattern and master it. numbers change but the pattern is the same. i always thought a lot but just brushed it off as noise or stuff i had no need to worry about. then i took a blunt to the lungs and i started connecting dots and making sense of things. i abused the weed and ultimately led to me dropping out. i started getting into psychology too. why the hell do people do the crazy shit they do. started analyzing everyones behavior. recently cause of LSD, i want to learn chemistry and make pure acid. ive thought of going back to officially become a philospher though. i want to know everything. i fear when i do it will corrupt me. it was Descartes. i kept thinking emmanuel kant for some reason. stay focused anon. then start a philosophy and math college like plato

reading that reminded me of why i couldnt do good in school, haha. ill keep looking into it but i cant concentrate when im reading. my mind wanders off but still keeps reading. then i dont remember what i read

it was plato that said for the perfect government to exist it had to be run by a philosopher king right?
