what would be the best way to sneak into area 51? has anyone done it? i'm nearby on a road trip and want to fuck around and see how far i can get.
i've determined that entering from the west would be best using a ghillie suit to crawl down the hill into the side of the base...around 37°14'24.6"N 115°49'31.0"W.
i'm not sure if they have IR surveillance, but i guess i'll find out. i have 8 hours of free time so i'm going to start my approach around 37°10'56.8"N 115°53'03.4"W and head north along the bottom ridge until about 37°12'03.2"N 115°51'18.5"W since there's an outpost there.
once i get around the outpost i'll head to the peak of papoose mountain and crawl down hopefully into the side of the base...

I was a security contractor with EG&G at Groom Lake from 2002-2004.
My post was off road 7, which is what you described as the 'outpost', it's approx. 13 klicks SW of your supposed target entrance.
As you can imagine, the US govt. is fairly lazy when it comes to security. I can't say what advancements have been made since drone tech, but I'm assuming they'd do an occasional flyby using IR drones. If you make your ghillie suit thick enough you'd be undetectable.
On my rotations, we'd have 15 units for each perimeter, each would rotate every 3 hours, for a total of 60 units. There are barracks on base for security, but most personnel are shipped daily to and from the base on 747s that operate from LAS.
Anyways, I'm sure you could make it close if you took your time. You'll need more than 8 hours, and supplies. If you have sniper training you could make it.
If you're apprehended, you'll be locked in the south east brig, that's where they put most trespassers. From there, you're shipped out on a separate flight to local authorities. MIN 6 month detainment.

They have movement and body heat sensors, you will be detected, the only way you could make in is run through the bush and maybe you might get close. The only way you can make it in is if you don't worry about getting back out again, you will be chased by the camo dudes if you tried to drive through so you would have to dodge pick up trucks attempting to block the road and then you would have to smash through the gate, at this point you are dodging bullets; you then can drive down the air strip and by this point you will be getting swarmed and fired at, you then have to either attempt to fight back (you need a gun for this), try and make it back out again, which will probably be impossible or you can surrender (but they will probably just shoot you) and maybe they might escort you out and/or get police to arrest you.
