I've collected swords. Not weeaboo or decorative stuff, but individual historical replicas I had made by real blacksmiths. Personally I collect swords because I love the history behind "the sword" if you will, a history that guns lack in my opinion.
Historically I like them because of what they represent. Human history. They were the souls of samurai, and a key part of life for soldiers throughout history.
Soldiers who used them to defend their homeland, to defend freedom, etc.
It's a symbol of all these people and our long history.
This is why they have such a key role in fantasy and mythology, which is another reason I love them. They feel like remnants of another time, and they have that same feeling, that same symbolism when I have a sword from my favorite stories, like lord of the rings.
And yeah, I could collect stamps. or lord of the rings action figures, or some other crap. But to me, those simply lack the same "soul" if you will.
So no, it's not because it looks cool, it's because I love everything surrounding them.

Spears, polearms, axes, and maces were much much more common weapons that were handled as melee weapons during medieval times. Spears and polearms have always been the go to for a easy to use and easy to make weapon.
