Meh, I didn't back up. Dual booted 3 times and triple booted 2 times. Nothing ever happened. Had some problems with grub not installing in Kali tho

I only run kali in a vm since I work alot with scripts that can fuck up ma computer also so it makes backing up to screenshots easier

Dualbooting is a whole different experience. Running any graphical Linux distro in a VM is going to feel sloppy compared to the real thing, unless you really give the VM a lot of resources. And once you start dual-booting and using Linux off of the bare metal of your computer, there'll come a moment during which you'll realize "Holy shit, this is -my- computer. Everything is under my control".

As for Kali, I've never used it, but using it as a permanent install distribution seems... dumb, to say the least. It's made to be booted off of a live medium to not leave any traces on the machine. Giving it it's own permanent filesystem seems counter-intuitive.

You should never install kali to anything other than a separate laptop / ARM device / Live USB w. persistence.

It's not only bad practice, but it's dangerous if you don't 100% understand what you're doing, since it's always running under root.

That said, yeah definitely try dual-booting ubuntu, and once you get the hang of that, try something deeper like Mint or Debian.

As for wanting to try out Kali, it's literally just Debian with pre-installed CompSec tools, installed, so maybe skip ubuntu and go straight to Debian just so you're saving time by learning them both.

Also, until you're very comfortable with Kali, keep it on a VM, it's a lot harder to accidentally get in trouble that way.
