A 1997 Kawasaki ZX-11. Awesome bike, my uncle used to have one that I rode a few times. Found this one as a basket case on Craigslist about a year ago. Figured it just needed carbs cleaned and fluids changed. Now I'm concerned the reason it was parked in the first place was because it has low compression which effectively means the bike is scrap. Nothing on it worth putting the kind of money a rebuild would cost.
Worst comes to worst, there's a motorcycle scrap yard nearby that also sells used bikes. I'm hoping they might cut me a decent deal on a used Yamaha Bolt they have on hand in exchange for the Ninja.

I doubt it's anything that serious, I get the impression the mileage on the bike is probably a lot higher than the odometer indicates. When I got the bike a ton of parts were not the original ones, and based on the wear on the chain, sprockets, dirt, etc I think it's likely it has a lot more than the 24k the odometer shows.
Honestly, and I'm going full conspiritard here, I think the guy who originally owned it ran it hard, on shitty oil, for quite a while. So it looses compression, the guy parks it in his garage, starts to tear it apart, and gives up when he realizes how much work it'll be. Sells it to the guy I eventually bought it from, so on top of having whatever is originally wrong with it, it's also been sitting for (as best I can tell) at least 3 years.
But an engine rebuild for that bike would be stupid expensive. I could maybe try and find another motor for it, but at that point I don't really want to. I'd rather just dump the thing and pick up another bike.

Thanks, I'm not into it for a huge amount of money so if I can sell it and get a couple hundred for the parts value, I won't cry too hard. I'm just mad because I hate leaving projects half finished, but this one is (seemingly) so impractical I just don't think it's worth it.

It can be a good way to start cycling. I'd love to have one myself actually. As long as it fits well you can expect to need new tubes, maybe tires, cables and brake pads. Anything else would just be gravy. Those bikes are so much fun to ride. We always geek out in the shop when they come in. Had a bike with hubs proudly made in West Germany the other day

Depends on the bike. Some of the bearing systems might need some adjusting but it varies from bike to bike. I'd stay away from stem shifters too, they like to stab you in the tender bits when you crash.
