How accurate are these until empty gauges?
>>
it doesn't matter. you should never let your tank get that low, it's bad for the fuel pump
>>
>>672878517
Absolutely right, fill up with 3/4 tank left
>>
>>672878346
Bout 25 miles or so.
>>

>>

>>
>>672878346
There's usually wiggle room, 20 miles past "0 to empty" should be fine.
If it doesn't work out, a nice trucker will give you a ride to the nearest gas station... But remember, nothing is free ;)
>>
>>672878670
They are accurate but the word "empty" could be deceiving. There are usually a few gallons left after your tank is "empty" which is useful to people like yourself.

This isn't bad for your fuel pump, it's pumping all of the time regardless. This is some passed down bullshit that people like to spew when they don't know what they are talking about.
>>
>>672878735
are you fucking stupid? what costs more, replacing your burnt out fuel pump or keeping a gerry can or a couple gallons in the tank?
>>
>>672878856
What the fuck is a trucker?
>>
If you run out call sha.
>>
>>672878645
Fill up with 3/4 tank that's fucking stupid. I'd have to stop and fill up every 50 fucking miles 3/4 is the same as 75/100 you know that right?
>>
>>672878908
>running the car dry is not bad for the fuel tank

tell us more mister computermechanic
>>
>>672878999
*pump
i was trippin
>>
>>672878346
You've probably got a gallon left when it says it's "empty". Depending on what car and traffic conditions, figure 25-35mi until it's actually out.
>>
Your pump pumps from the bottom every time anyways. Don't be stupid
>>
>>672878911
Enjoy your fumes you idiot. I guess i understand why you're so retarded, must be all the gas you've been inhaling over the years
>>
>>672878999
It's not dry when it's below 1/4 of a tank. Yes, running it completely out is bad and stupid but making sure you stay above 1/4 of a tank is idiotic. You run way more risk of running out of gas and being stranded in a bad location than you do burning out your fuel pump.
>>
>>672878989
Yes, I know how to reduce fractions

Also, when you get to a half tank, the ethanol they use to dilute the gasoline becomes more concentrated... It's a safety hazard, could cause an explosion in your gas tank.
>>
>>672878908
I'm not sure why you say it's not bad for the fuel pump. Most modern cars are a bypass regulator type which maintains pressure in the rail and bypasses extra volume back to the tank. This cools and lubricates the pump. However they are generally interlocked with an oil pressure switch preventing the pump from running if the engine isn't running which would prevent dry running of the pump when out of fuel...
>>
I dont let my tank get below 7/8 full. If you go anymore than 31/32 you run the chance of burning out fuel filter.
>>
>>672879444
Your mama's asshole could cuz an explosion
>>
>>672879212
if he's driving around with the fuel light on and it telling him he's only got 2 miles left before empty, how many times do you think before he runs it dry?
and yes, even if you don't run it dry, it's still not ideal, any particulate in the tank gets sucked into the filter all at once
>>
>>672879475
The odds of this causing permanent damage is so slim that it's not worth mentioning. It's like saying you shouldn't open the car door to get in or out when it's raining as water could get in the door panel and cause your window switches to malfunction. If you run at E all the time, you're an idiot. If you run through a normal tank of gas and fill up when you're about on E, you're fine.
>>
I just bought the car today and figured I'd try to see how far until actually empty. I had a GMC that said less than 10 miles and I squeezed another 50 miles out of it.
>>
>>672879202
what in the fuck are you talking about. gerry cans have lids. then if you can still smell it, you put it in a garbage bag. i guess someone as fucking mentally impotent as you, who has to ask these kind of questions might not be able to figure that out.
>>
>>672878346

Couple points.

Gas tanks dont get as cruddy anymore. They are plastic, not metal. Its current year not 1960.

Over time, leaving your tank on empty most the time would collect moisture in the tank and cause it to rust. Its not as much of an issue.

There are many filters in the way. Its unlikely to burn out a pump even if foreign mater got in there.

Gas tank measuring is done pretty much with a ping pong ball on a metal stick. Overfill too much and it gets bent over time. Im not sure if this still applies to post 90s vehicles.

They are relatively accurate.

What you have to worry about is leaving a tank on empty all the time and collecting condensation. Like we talking 10-20 years of doing this.

Running out and burning out the pump. That can happen.

Putting shitty gas from an old shitty can in there.

Thats about it.
>>
>>672879552
I guess you should avoid hitting bumps while driving too as this could mix up the particulate in the tank and result it in being sucked up in to the fuel pump...
>>
>>672879781
Way to go Kramer.
>>
>>672879833
I just skip the can and put gas directly into bag. Just make sure you label it.
>>
ONCE your on 0 you have an average of 30 miles to go. It's in your manual.
>>
NOTORIOUSLY inaccurate. The build quality of gas tanks varies, the build quality of the tank sender unit varies, hell- even temperature, barometer and humidity factor in. I had a car that empty MEANT emty, and others with as much as a 4 galon reserve once you hit "E".

If you REALLY want to know, get a gas can with a few gallons in it, and when you're low, drive and drive and drive. You'll know EXACTLY what's really empty.
>>
>>672879851
Someone that knows what they are talking about has joined the thread!
>>
>>672879883
you want it mixed up, moron. that's why you want to keep as much gas in the tank as possible. that way it doesn't all get sucked into the filter at the same time and clog it up. when there's just a tiny bit of gas left in the tank, the particulate is more concentrated

If you run out of gas, just add 1 cup to 1 gallon of water through fuel filler. It will rinse any residual gas that is stuck to the walls of the gas tank down to the pump. It will run a little rough, but you can limp to the next station.
>>
>>672878346
diesel or petrol-engine?
>>
>>672880312
Wrong again. Sediment settles to the bottom of the tank. The fuel pump inlet is on the bottom of the tank. EVERY TIME you start the engine, it draws at that sediment. Most tanks are plastic now, so this isn't even a real issue now.
>>
>>672880507
Bleach works better. Especially if the vehicle had a steel gas tank.

>>
>>672880663
I don't usually don't carry bleach, but coke does the trick too. Just make sure you run some heavy duty floor cleaner through the tank when you get a chance. The coke gums things up.

>>
Obsolence?
>>
My volvo has a 70 litre tank, but a 10 litre fuel system one way to the engine.

The tank can approach empty, and the fuel system will stop dumping fuel into the tank, and simply push any fuel returning to the tank into the main feed for the engine.

So your fuel tracker can read 0 miles to empty, and it'll be right, the tank will be empty, but the fuel lines will not be
>>
>>672881756
The newer explorers are pure shit. My 2013 (105k miles) has been in and out of the shop for suspension issues, wheel bearings (a lot), and a stupid fucking air scoop that keeps falling off of the bottom of the engine... An air scoop on the BOTTOM of the engine, so off-roadable!

I don't thrash vehicles, I have an 06 fusion with 150k miles, still on original clutch and no issues.

>>
>>672882050
i didn't say more efficient. but i'll take a '85 ford escort over any comparable model from recent years. there is no question that they're better made. more comfortable too. have you noticed that when you get in a new car, no matter what it is, you can't even tell what you're sitting in?
a hundred thousand dollar mercedes has all the same shit plastic controls that a 20 thousand dollar chevy has. new cars are all shit. they all drive nicely for about 50k miles and then implode as they're designed to. and you can't work on them yourselves. plus, no recalls. they actually knew how to build cars in the 20th century.

have fun having your car "hacked" and shut down by some punks

89 crown Vic, sold at 235k miles
06 fusion, love it
03 ranger, meh, but it never broke down, gave it to my bro
94 grand Cherokee, was OK. Had some issues scrapped at 185k
90 sunbird turbo, fun, but blew the turbo, sold at 150k
95 jag xj6 complete shitbox, more time in the shop than in the road. Took it to a mud bog and let it blow itself up in the swamp

>>

Moisture is retained in the air inside of the tire, causes corrosion. Flat repairs would come in, if it was a chrysler, 90% chance it was a rim leak
Rims are actually assholes, that's where "rimjob" comes from

He probably means where the bead seats on the rim. Corrosion will creep under from the outside in, working its way between the rubber and the rim.

Oh. Lol

Am i the only one wondering why you have a flosspick jammed in your vent?
>>
>>672888150
Those are all Chrysler products. Chrysler is/was the parent company. Yay Fiat!
>>
>>672888509
i know. that's why i mentioned them.
>>
>>672888431
Because they are fucking expensive. I only throw them away if they have food on them I can't suck off.

If you let it be that low your fuel pump will burn out, the fuel is supposed to cool it
>>
>>672888798
We had an old lady bring a Cherokee in... 4 cans of fix a flat in each tire. It looked like I had murdered swamp thing and dragged his body around the shop.
>>
>>672889438
they won't believe you. they're tards.
>>
>>672888815

WOW THATS JEWISH AS FUCK
>>
>>672889596
yeah i've always heard stories of how shitty that stuff makes your work to do.
>>
>>672889989
If you just fill tires with fix a flat they will never go flat.
>>
>>672878517
Agreed. Learned that the hard way, sucked up a clog
>>
>>672890187
Fix a flat is temporary. If you want a true permanent fix: fill tires with "great stuff" expanding foam
>>
>>672891168
Use a long hose on that shit and it works better than a potato in the tail pipe...
>>
>>672889438
The fuel surrounding the pump is of little significance, the fuel flow inside the pump provides all the cooling it needs. And it really only requires cooling when it's pumping.

If, however, the tank often gets so dry that the pump will start repeatedly gasping air without stalling the engine, then the pump's life will be compromised.
