I like some anime. I really liked Cowboy bebop, I enjoyed attack on titan, knights of sidonia (kinda?), and some others. I've seen Full Metal Alchemist, both versions, they were okay...
Maybe you anime people can clear something up since I'm just not that knowledgeable.
Why do so many Anime's shove themselves into high school environments? 90% of Anime i've tried to watch is obsesssed with high schools, middle schools, and adolescent awkwardness. Is this intentional? It's very disenchanting and renders a lot of the shows awful in my opinion.
It seems like a lot of the shows thrive on absurdity (see: Gurren Lagan(sp?), FLCL, and others), which is also pretty immersion-ruining, and many others thrive on nothing but shoving the entire show into awkward preteen or teenage metaphors and social failings.
I also enjoyed the Ghost in the Shell series from some years ago, I liked Akira, I recently watched Psycho Pass which was okay but I felt like it really could've done a lot better.
Any suggestions from along these lines or explanations of these awkward anime trends?

i mean, it's only 6 episodes, so i'd totally recommend you give it another shot, but then again, i'm obviously very biased. it's definitely not for everyone, as it mashes a lot of different anime tropes (fighting robots, space pirates) and over the top stuff while also focusing on the banality of being like 12 and totally bored with the little world you live in, despite going through new surprising experiences (particularly around girls, sex, and your perception of what it means to be an adult when most of the time adults fail to meet those expectations). it also has a ton of stuff that's obviously there because the team working on it decided it sounded like a fun/cool thing to do, like the random shifts in animation style (notably two manga sequences that they hated doing).

It would take a 20 minute rant to go over it thoroughly, but seeing the problem requires a historical context. What people were expecting, and what was given. In the Light Novels that Haruhi is based off of, Endless Eight resolved somewhat quickly and should have been adapted into roughly two episodes. People expected the season finale to be Disappearance, but the studio was saving that for a film and didn't tell the fans that they'd be wasting six episodes of 14 episode season. The fans had to come to this realization gradually as it refused to end and they kept airing the same episode over and over. It slowly drove the fandom insane and made them very upset.

no. this was not god tier. i'd give it 3/5 at best. it's overrated. the only good thing was a main character was actually killed off for real, and it actually mattered to the characters and the story beyond. it had somewhat dynamic characters, but it also had a lot of characters for the sake of having characters. in addition, almost all the characterization for all the characters was done completely during the story. apparently yoko, kittan, kittan's sisters, every other character who showed up except rossiu, they all had and did NOTHING before joining team dai-gurren.
i guess if you like action and don't give a fuck about characterization, it's good, but there are other anime with better action(imo) and better characterization.

Actually, the fact that they did nothing before joining team Dai-Gurren is kind of the point. Kamina, Simon, and Yoko started a revolution that overthrew the powers that be. Why focus on what happened in the past? Why show every character's backstory? They're not fighting for yesterday, they're fighting for a new tomorrow.
Also, almost every anime follows the fight sequence you outlined in greentext.
Why I think Gurren Lagann actually excels as an anime is that the entire story thematically revolves around the ideas of Drills and Spirals. Drills are meant for pushing forward, not heading back, and that's the way this show treats the plot. No matter what happens to them, the point is that if you keep on digging, eventually you'll find the answer you were looking for. Spirals continue until they reach their peak, and that's what this show does. It escalates the situation constantly.
Gurren Lagann is the perfect Anime. Truly the perfect 10/10.
