i've never been to korea, but i think they are actually genuinely pretty racist there as they are even more insular than japan. japan has had foreigners since WW2. everyone is used to them to some extent especially in the bigger cities. in rural-ish places it's not even that weird to see foreigners. i've not really experienced any racism in japan that 'd define as racism.
some people talk about 'micro aggressions' (basically tumblr sjw bullshit) that to a normal person is where you get worn down by every single fucking person asking you the same questions - where are you from, can you speak japanese, when are you leaving japan (this is an assumption, that you are temporary). tbh, people need to fucking getting over themselves and acknowledge that people are curious as to why you chose to come to japan (inevitably it's for pussy or chinese cartoons)
