McGregor made several mistakes in the build up to and during this fight.
1) Choosing to fight at 170lbs. With RDA out and Diaz in, he allowed Diaz not to cut a single pound in weight. From a tactical perspective, he should have forced him to cut as much weight as possible.
2) He himself actually put on weight to get up to 168lbs. He's never fought that heavy in his life, which meant he didn't know how his body would respond. Clearly, it responded badly; he looked gassed not far into the second round and he didn't carry any extra power.
3) Loading up on his shots. As the first round progressed, he moved from landing two or three punch combinations to loading up and going for broke on single shots. With a man like Diaz who is longer, uses his range fantastically and has a granite chin that was a poor strategy.
4) Relying on his reflexes to avoid shots. Conor's reflexes are good, but he thought he was Anderson Silva c.2012 out there. What the fuck was he thinking? He was trying to move his head at first, but this didn't work and so he decided that he'd just eat punches all day. Fighting a guy with stand up as good as Diaz, who is known for accumulative damage rather than one-punch power, is madness.
5) Shooting for a takedown. Everybody knows that Diaz is a world-class MMA BJJ practitioner. He was hurt and panicked, so he shot for a takedown and when it was stuffed and Diaz ended up on top, it was game over.
Credit where it's due; Diaz is a great fighter and made McGregor realise that 170lbs is no joke. Robbie Lawler, the 170lbs champion, would eat McGregor alive in one round.
This is a huge win for Diaz; McGregor was the de-facto number one contender at 155lbs, so with a win over him (albeit at 170lbs) this should put Diaz in place for the title shot. Win that and you've got a Diaz vs McGregor rematch for the 155lbs belt.
McGregor should return to the 145 division. Jose Aldo at UFC 200 makes the most sense, as his grappling isn't as strong as Edgar's.

To be fair, the Diaz brothers do have power, they just attenuate that power for the sake of volume and accuracy. One punch will be 30%, the next 60, the next 45...this also extends their stamina since they're not throwing bombs the whole time. It's not that don't have power, they just make efficient use of it.
