So I've decided in the next couple of days to off myself. I feel at peace about it. I failed in my life, never did anything but play video games and waste it, and now in my late 30's I see the futility of going on. I'm going to use this old 38 police special thats been in my family for a long time. I'm going mouth route and aiming for the brain stem. The issue I'm having is that the only two types of bullets I have are the full metal jacket and the lead tip. Also both of these bullets are very old, like 10's of years. So in order to achieve a positive outcome of an almost instant off switch, I've decided to buy new ammo. What kind should I get? I'm thinking some kind of hollow point, but I'm not sure what would work best for point blank maximum damage. I REALLY don't want to fuck it up and end up a vegetable or paralyzed or some shit. That fear is really the only concern I have left in life (which actually feels pretty good honestly)

The person I'm speaking of used a 9mm. You don't really know what the damage will look like from a bullet. Sometimes its pock marks that barely bleed, other times its much worse. A hollowpoint will mushroom and cause more damage but theirs no guarantee it'll do what you want it to.

A .38 special is meant for close range with that short of a barrel, so any hollow point would work. But Federal is an ammunition company, period.
