If you leave you are free to explore the cosmos and chose another body if you want to. Beware though, other souls are fighting for the good ones. I have experienced death. It is kinda shitty. Not the worst thing. Id definitely rather have a body. Almost all sensory input is lost. No pain but no pleasure. There is still imagery but it is in like varying shades of darkness. Words don't really do it justice, I had a near death experience and I can't really say I know though because I only perceived I was about to die, but even then I starkly remember being surprised how basic (or at least not very grandeur or spiritual) and almost mathematical it was, its really just a void and those few seconds before are designed to help you cross over easier. Its like an automatic switch gets thrown in your brain when it realizes its about to be non existent and in response gives you a few seconds for your consciousness to get it together/come to terms with death/do who knows what, I guess its totally different per person. Likewise, the mater that makes up your brain currently provides the medium for you consciousness to arise. Take your brain, put it in a blender, and pour it back in, you're no more alive than if you had no brain at all. "You" are gone, and you're left with a corpse. Just like the wave is gone, and you're left with some ocean water. More waves can come from that water, but it won't be the same wave. From the perspective of the subject dying, no particular thing is necessarily happening. Regardless if there is an afterlife or not, no one will experience non-existence. If there is no afterlife, and we die, we wont "be there" to experience something which is by definition the end of the experiencing agent. If there is an after life, then obviously we will continue existing/experiencing in some form and thus we are still "alive" (at least in spirit).
So we will never, from our subjective viewpoint, cease to exist. Nor do we remember when we came into existence. So we are, in a sense, eternal no matter what our view on the afterlife is.
Well, at least as long as we think about it from our subjetice viewpoint From the perspective of observers (other subjects) there's a different story. We can watch others die, and other ca watch us die. So we are not eternal in the eyes of observers.
