Why is this film so fucking shit? How in the hell did it get an Oscar?
It's literally just some fighting in the woods, with the most dull and simplistic plot.
I'm really not hard to please when it comes to films but this was boring nonsense.
>>671484514
The film didn't get an oscar you fucking retard
Yeah i mean the rest of the movies were just series of pictures of people talking and doing stuff like wtf
He got an Oscar because the news sites wanted to report on him receiving an award. They also wanted attention from social media.
All these award shows are a sham. Built to idolize the film industry in a time where film, as a medium, has been marginalized and monetized too far beyond artistic expression.
>>671484514
finally sat all the way through it on my third attempt
the movie isn't bad it's just really boring compared to what's out there
i liked a lot of the themes and I really liked how each portion of leo's journey felt unique in tone and story
the story was kind of partitioned so that there was a lot of start, change, stop
the directing was probably the weakest aspect, especially cine
idk. overall 6/10. i dont get why its so popular
im genuinely pissed that the cinematographer for The Revenant won over the cinematographer for Sicario.
>>671485181
Any movie sites you could recommend?
I ate an edible before me and my babs went to go see it.
Long takes are great while high etc. enjoyable movie overall. Not a very high "re-watchability" factor, but impressive
didn't really get us to that cathartic magic moment at the end.

They gave him an Oscar to cover up the fact that no niggas were nominated. Now this years oscars will be remembered as the one Leo won, not as #oscarssowhite
its a well crafted film albeit boring, too long and full of uninteresting characters. leo was just being leo again, the main actor who knows hes right, never has moral issues or second thoughts / doubts or anything character-like and so he got an oscar cos he had to eat a real fish and it was a hard movie to make or something
>>671487441

Haven't seen it, but I heard it is one long tracking shot. The director used long takes in The Revenant, but avoided that gimmick. The Revenant was filmed with an Arri Alexa 65 using only natural light.

>>671488513
I think the revenant is a fantastic film and honestly really impressive, but I probably wouldn't watch it again in its entirety. Too long.
As far as birdman, I found it to be one of the most pretentious loads of horse shit I ever made myself sit through. I hate stories where there is no line between fantasy and reality, and overall it just fucking sucked.
It was filmed to make it all look like one extremely long shot though, which is pretty cool.
That's its only merit imo.
First movie I watched twice in cinema because I was so damn impressed.
I get it that for al lot of people The Revenant is a love it / hate it kinda thing, but imo the movie is fucking great and all that DiCaprio hate seems to be the new cool kids talk to me - pretty pathetic.
Also I don´t get how superficial some people get to bash The Revenant: "It's literally just some fighting in the woods" - that´s like saying Star Wars is "just some shooting in space" or Pulp Fiction "just some talking about burgers and foot massages". Dude did you even watch the fucking thing?
I think most people who bash it really don´t get one important core message of the movie.
With the death of his son he loses the very last connection he had to his happy past, the last reason to live this unbear(ehehhehe)able existance. But he keeps going, he fights his way through hell, which shows how bright the will of a single human soul can shine - in the end he gets his revenge but then realizes now he truly has NOTHING to live for anymore. With the closing scene of Glass looking right into the camera he´s questioning his whole journey. All the suffering, all the fighting, all the pain - for what?
He´ll never get his son back.
He´ll never get his wife or his past back.
He survived so many things but in the end he will die just as everyone of us will. So was there really a point of crawling out of his grave and fighting his way through the wilderness? And all questions which are related to this subject you can transfer to your own life, your own struggles, your own pain. THIS is the shit that impressed me the most.
>>671489231
I disagree. Sicario was an intense film and benicio del Toro seems like he was fucking made for his role in it, but cinematography was not better.
Can't beat dem wide landscape shots
>>671489231
Miller has spent the last three decades producing and directing movies about a pig and some penguins. He hasn't really been at the top of his game as a director since The Road Warrior in 1981.

And my father works in fur. So this movie actually directly appeals to my and my heritage so perhaps that's why it's so good for me. I understand why it would be boring for many as they are not connected to this and it is just a movie for them.

Cons
>zero character development
>extremely weak shadow of a plot to facilitate endless chase scenes
>unnecessary and awkward love story crammed in where it doesn't need to be
>overall a film that's all flash and zero substance
Pros
>while it is all flash, it's a pretty cool fucking flash
>special + practical effects make for really great visuals
>costumes/makeup, sets/location all great
It was interesting but overall pointless. Wouldn't waste time to watch it again. I'd give it a 7-7.5/10.

I don't think he's questioning it. He is resigned to the fact he has been wounded in the fight and is not going to make it. His wife is there to help him put his burden to rest.
>>671490831
this. People don't realize that all of his roles have been subpar compared to his role in that movie
>>671490003
I think his point was more that Miller has made one (albeit very) good film in about 30 years.
Fury Road is the shit. But Miller has barely made anything else worthwhile since The Road Warrior.
>>671490713
I can't agree or disagree one way or the other; I haven't seen the precursors. Based on the commentary I heard from others though, fury road was more devoid of substance than its prequels.
>>671490561
>he sucked in all of those
Uwotm8?
Leo was fucking INCREDIBLE in the departed. One of the most intense and impressive movies I've ever experienced. Seriously kept me on the edge of my seat as the pace picked up.
He was enjoyable in catch me if you can, but I don't think Oscar-worthy. The aviator was very good, I don't think he was too young at all.
I have to admit I liked wolf of wall street even if I didn't want to. It was a movie that held your interest.
I don't think I've seen even half his movies. I believe he should have won before this, but I'm glad he's finally won.
>>671489743
Holy shit, an anon that isn't two-dimensional cancer. Personally I thought the scene where he "sees" his dead wife, only for her to fade away, was him realizing that he still wanted to live, even with his son's death avenged. That the murders and his journey were cathartic--and traumatizing--enough for him to let go of the past.
The movie should grasp you from the very outset.
Literally the first scene where they traverse through the water-ridden woods, you are engulfed in the sound of flowing water.
This is one of the few movies that set itself apart by using superb sound and visuals.
Sure the story wasn't all that great, but I was too distracted by the sound of melting snow while Leo was trying to get out of a dead horse's carcass.
I was too distracted by the crisping campfire with a panorama view of the snowy mountains in a snowstorm.
I dont know about y'all motherfuckers, but this movie got some fucking atmosphere. 8.5/10
>>671490474
>>Doesn't waste time sitting around explaining why you should care about the characters. Development is shown through action and body language.
>>Context is key. Plot is driven by motive which is tied to a chase. In a wasteland where resource is scarce and distance is traveled almost solely by car, the setup makes complete sense.
>>If by awkward and unnecessary love story, you mean the interactions between Max and Furiosa, then you miss the point of their characters. They're both damaged, redemption driven people, kindred spirits. Max realizes this and takes care to ensure her safety. If there was a love subplot he wouldn't have left at the end.

I understand subtlety. There's a difference between finesse and lack of content.
I honestly got bored a few times during actions sequences just waiting for a reason to care. The movie didn't give me one.
Don't get me wrong, it was cool as shit, but that's not enough. That can only hold your interest for so long.
As far as the love story, I'm talking about the kid stowaway with the two lumps on his neck and one of the runaway wives. Forced, heavy-handed and unnecessary.
You're blinding yourself because you want so hard for it to be as good as you tell yourself it is.
It isn't. It's not bad, but it's closer to 5/10 than 10/10.

>>671491048
Yeah when I saw What's Eating Gilbert Grape, I was just watching it because I bored one night. It really hit me in the feels, and movies don't do that to me very often. Just something about his realism of playing an autistic child struck a chord/cord(?). In my opinion that's his best acting role. In all his other roles he does the voice crack/squeak thing when he yells too loud and I almost can't take him seriously.

Him being not able to make it is a good point, on the other hand he survived the whole bear thing, so I don´t think after the fight against Fizzgerald Glass would be like "welp, this is it". His wounds didn´t look like super bad, but I might be wrong here.
>His wife is there to help him put his burden to rest.
The fact she is walking away from him imo symbolizes "losing her" completly. Maybe she´s kinda thankful in Glass´ mind that he took revenge for their son, but for me it looks more like Glass "waking up" from his revenge drive and realizing there´s nothing left to fight for. Plus all his fighting didn´t make a difference in the end.
>>671491276

Silent films don't age
We just have 3d movies now.
>>671495415

The point of movies is that theyre the one thing that don't age.
All movies are reflections of the world and technologies of their time.
00 movies aren't bad. We just have better.
They don't get worse as time goes on.
People like you just expect them to captivate you like they once did. Expect them to be comparable to new movies.
It's not right to say so. Inconceivable even
>>671495720

That's not aging at all dude.
Aging is deterioration and decomposition. Something not being what it once was.
Movies are always what they are. What they will always be. That's immortal.
