This depends entirely on what you define as "racism". Personally, I have a bias against black people. But despite this bias, I allow each person, regardless of any first impression I may construct of them, to prove whether or not they are decent as a person. It is not for me, a citizen, to care about broad trends of behavior among race. I will take my time and filter each person.
Summary: If you have racial bias but don't allow it to affect actual impactful decisions, then it doesn't matter whether or not it's wrong.

I don't have time to address a whole list of African bug eaters dwelling in mud huts so I'll address a couple of your best examples.
Mali, at it's peak was run by Mansa Muda who is generally regarded as one of Africa's greatest kings. He had a ton of gold but it came mostly from selling slaves (his people) to the Arab world (who fully castrated them, dick and balls) and converting to Islam in order to do business with them. He had a couple of "fortresses", and by fortresses, I mean large mud huts.
And then there's Ethiopia. Ethiopia was a bit more modern than most of modern Africa since the middle ages. They adopted Christianity early and really strived to be a bit more modern than most of Africa. Actually making several beautiful stone churches and stone architecture that has lasted for centuries. Since they were a more modern civilization, they refused to let themselves be colonized for centuries, the first nation to conquer them was Benito Mussolini's Italy. But since they were conquered by Italy, they've had nearly a century of starvation as competing factions violently fought to control the government and infrastructure goes to shit.
And Nubia... Well, see the pic of Nubia, they had a long history of getting their asses kicked and being Egypt's slaves. They tried to rip off Egyptian style but seeing as how "we wuz kangs and sheeyit" they could only build miniature 20 foot pyramids because science is elusive to blacks.
I particularly like when blacks claim Egyptian ancestry when they're not the same race. The Arabs are far closer racially to the ancient Egyptians than sub saharan blacks. Pic related, Pharaoh conquest the nubians.

If race were just skin deep, then of course there would be no issue, but race also determin the likelihood of many behavioural traits, for example, the mao-a gene, which is extremely more prominent in black people than other races, causing a lot of blacks to commit violent acts with no remorse.
With modern western technology, few jobs are available that require basic repetitive movements, such as factory workers. This causes problems with regards to race as the discrepancy of intelligence means that whites are able to acquire jobs with a higher mental capability requirement, whereas blacks who don't meet those requirements are simply left jobless, meaning that they rely on the majority white taxpayer to survive.
These are just a few reasons, there are also racial tensions from tribal instincts and other things that you can look into.

Sure, I understand that analogy and think that it was valid maybe even 30 years ago to some extent, but I don't think it's as valid anymore. Of course there will always be people that unjustifiably judge people solely based on the color of their skin, but I think that the number of those people is less and less. When it comes to being turned down by teachers or employers, I also think that's more the issue of the past. Again, of course it exists today, which is sad, but I feel that if you work hard and get good grades etc. teachers or employers in most cases won't turn a person down just because of their background. The biggest problem in succeeding will in my opinion be the environment where these people grow up, as they won't be getting same sort of support from parents etc. that others may get. I feel that the only people that truly can fix the issue of ghettos are the people living in there.
