Get a router with DD-WRT as a starter. Learn that bitch inside and out. Build a cheap PC and load it up with Windows Server, setup DHCP, DNS and ADDS. Learn to manage it with Power Shell.
That skill set will get you through the door for a real job.

The reason I pay my low level guys 15 an hour is because that is their value to my business. You don't know enough to be worth more. Get an entry level at 10 - 15 (depending on where you live) and leave after 2 years. You will be worth way more then.
Also these jobs are about networking. Go to a local computer store (not a chain) and tell them you want to learn how to be a tech. Some will allow you work there at 10 an hour and train you. 10 an hour to have someone do the shit work is worth it.
Stay late, ask questions, be useful.
Remember is a professional service career and high level IT is on par with attorney and CPA. I don't hear you bitching because you have to know someone to be an attorney.
Also read the ads that say degree and experience. The verbiage I use (and alot of people in my industry use) is degree or related experience. I have a BA in music with a theater minor, before I started my company, not a fuck was given about my degree.
Also if it does require a degree and experience and you are missing one or both, they you are not fucking qualified for the job.

My brother is a repair welder. Started in Alaska and has worked all over the globe. Have to be tough to do hat he does and he has worked in some real shit holes. Was in Iraq for 2 years where they always had a contingent of contractors with them. He loved it though, said the contractors were cool as fuck and taught all the americans how to use various weapons so they could assist if there was ever an attack. He also has a lot of great stories from working with them. One of my favorites was when a man go fired for almost killing somebody because he was a dumb fuck. He swore he was coming back the next day to kill everybody. He shows up outside the site the nex afternoon. Gets out of his car, and a sniper blows his brains out. Because "I play around with computers in my spare time" hardly qualifies as valid experience. Most places require evidence of experience either in previous jobs where they can contact your employer or in certs.
Both of which are provided by some other business. Usually. So it is impossible to have proof of valid experience if there no later experience building entry level jobs.
You don't have to pay well for entry level but at least hire people so they can be somewhat useful and gain experience.
Think about it another way, you have standards for what you think people in that field should be competent at right? If you take some time to handle the initial training and experience building of entry levels you make sure they meet your standards. That's a good thing.
Take the time to invest in people. It's worth it.
