It's not that expensive if you can find someone that vapes to help guide you. Retail stores for vaping stuff is a nice way to try it out. Don't buy anything though. Order the same shit online and save a ton. It's not that expensive, honestly.
Think of it like this: for the cost of two cartons of smokes you can get started, and be able to vape for much longer than you can smoke those two cartons, then you can just get more e-liquid which is much cheaper than smokes.

The flavor is really great, and so is the vapor production. But, I think the real benefit to them is that it's easier to make tighter coils with them. I feel like they are only a small amount better than parallel fused claptons. It's also a lot easier to make coils with them. Compared to regular fused where you need to make sure they are uniformed and flat across to avoid hotspots and open gaps.

About the studies, I looked for the monkey study, but it is from the 70s, so I couldn't find much besides pages that may be biased pro pot, so this is the only source I found with my little searching: http://www.mit.edu/~thistle/v13/2/myths.html
