Where I live viewing is legal and possession won't land you into jail. Also there is no sex offender list. Criminal records are not public so only government has access to it, but employers who "deal with children" like schools and stuff have the right to ask for your "criminal records" that you have to go ask from police station in person.
Also, the records are not permanent. Well, records are but they are archived and wont show up if someone looks at the records. They last from 5 to 20 years depending on the severity of the crime and not all crimes even show up.
Assault / battery only show up if they are "aggravated", dunno the real equivalent in american system.
Last time I remember someone getting sentenced for possession and distribution/spreading child porn was 3 years and 2 months.
Tried to fiend what the sentence for possession is and found a guy with 70k pictures on hardrive got 50 days probation, so no jail or prison time at all. Also had 100k in his external harddrive but the crime was already "old" for some reason and those pictures didnt count. Max sentence is 1 year for possession says google, and as its shorter than 2 years it would be probation almost 100% and would stay in records for 5 years.
So, at least here, so much for that decade for those interested in the subject. The police also only really cares about the distribution. The sentences for possession are rare.
