If he was making a lot of sense he would have sterilized 75 percent of the population rather than kill half. 7 billion people on earth cut down to 3 and a half billion will be back where they started in 50 years or so.
It would also have gotten a lot less resistance from people trying to save the universe. Low birthrates make for a less catchy headline than half of everyone everywhere dead.

Actually, he definitely is. There's nothing in the movies that establishes any kind of context like that. Even if the MCU was equivalent to our world in that aspect, it still wouldn't make sense due to the miraculous super-technology that even just the people on Earth have discovered, much less abstract technology like the Infinity Gauntlet.
