That's cool that you're working on that. I muck around in Haskell from time to time, and I know some Python. I'm like super amateur though, never done anything constructive or functional, just some exercises occasionally.
I'm not religious I don't think, but I suppose it depends on how you'd define that. I'm an atheist materialist in my worldview, so I don't believe in anything supernatural. Don't really believe in like karma or anything like that either. I do take part in what you might call religious practices though, just because they seem to have a positive effect on me, it's all psychological for me though. I use tools like meditation, trance, and some ritual stuff to kinda help me understand aspects of myself or to reflect on things in my life and such.
It's very hard to say where a good start would be for someone new to the occult. One possibly good starting point might be the book "The Art of Creative Magick" by S. Connolly, as it kinda explores it in a very broad way to give you a sense of what you might be looking for in the practice of magick and such. That's a practical starting point. If you want read something interesting from like an intellectual standpoint, to explore sort of how occult practices originate and how nuanced/complex they can become, "Enochian Vision Magick" by Lon Milo DuQuette is a very fascinating read, going into the real world end of things of the origin of an occult system and also into how and why one might practice it.

There's a quote, actually it's from that book "Enochian Vision Magick", that "Magick is like theatre for the self", or something for that affect. So, in theater people suspend their disbelief and act out something fictional in order to artistically portray something real, like maybe love or tragedy or something like that. That's basically what magick is. Except sometimes the audience is just yourself, and the problems you're working through are more personal. So, if I like do some rite to like Lilith asking for help with this or that, I don't literally expect some demon to go "Hey, I totally dug that offering you gave me, maybe I can help you out". I'm just tapping into something deep within myself to help me approach the situation more creatively or optimistically or something. That's all.

Cooked for 21 minutes, strain, mash, add about 2-3 gobs of butter, about a half a cup of milk, or more/less depending on how thin/thick you want them. Now add salt and pepper, don't be stingy with either, just go ham. Then here's where it makes people look at me weird. Add 2 spoonfuls of mayo. ow mix it all up, them add in a heated can of corn (without the juice obviously), mix it up again, and bam. Best mashed potatoes I've ever had.
