As an artificially created creature they were still legally considered biotoys rather than animals, which denies them the protection of animal rights. This legal division is completely unfair and hypocritical, but is still enough for people to distance themselves from the moral dilemma of thousands of sapient beings starving in the streets.

A lot of people seem to take the idea of a "bio toy" literally, and say that fluffies are actually programmed, and not sentient... And I really don't see the point in that, as it effectively makes any harm they suffer irrelevant. Like if Sid from Toy Story was the human protagonist in all the stories, breaking tin soldiers.
