Polishing boots is somewhat of an optional activity. We don't get yelled at for unpolished boots here, as long as everyone keeps their boots black. And as long as you don't abuse your boots (which I do), they won't look crappy.
Some guys in my platoon gather in my bunk to polish shoes together. They mostly use the traditional polishing methods, occasionally Kiwi Express Shine. Chat with each other as they brush their boots and such.
I use the "half a can of Kiwi per boot and then blowtorch the hell out of it" method.

The way shoe polish works is that it's a wax of sorts. You apply a stupid amount of it on the boot and let it sit and harden so it won't come off easily. Then blowtorch it to melt the surface. Once it freezes again it'll be shiny once you wipe off the excess.
