Actually, prior to sometime in the early 90s, maybe late 80s they were the biggest supporter of gun control legislation. You see, they represent firearm manufacturers, not firearm owners. They support whatever the industry feels is in it's best interests. At one time it felt gun control was. Now it doesn't. It's always felt that safety regulations and civil/criminal liability due to manufacturer defects are not in it's best interests, so the NRA has always opposed those.
