You have to realize that teachers have basically been neutered. A student could walk out of my class, and there would be no real repercussion. He or she *might* be asked -- yes, asked -- to stay after for "detention" (we don't even call it that anymore), and if they don't show up to THAT? Nothing.
And the kids aren't stupid. They *know* we're impotent. I once had a student refuse to give me a piece of paper he was passing around. It was in his hand, so I fucking snatched that shit with Gumby-like reflexes. Didn't touch him. Just took it right out of his hand. His response? "You can't do that. I'm going to talk to (principal) about that and you'll lose your job."
It's like asking a firefighter who has had his hoses taken away from him, "why do you suck so badly at fighting fires?"

So naturally, he was failing. He was a good kid and I liked him a lot, despite his being a little wiseass, but he was just lazy. I tried motivating him, but it rarely amounted to anything meaningful.
A week before grades were to close, I come in and find a 504 in my mailbox. For those of you who don't know what a 504 is, it's a sort of informal plan for special accommodations that the administration, guidance counselor, student and student's parents come up with.
This 504 was for that lazy student. Claimed general anxiety or something, which was bullshit. Kid was anything but anxious.
The accommodations? It was retroactive, so I had to basically excuse every missed assignment up to that point and then I had to give him extra time on every assignment going forward. He passed with an A-
