Commissioned art is what kept art in the same mode for centuries. Look at the masters like Goya and Rembrandt. Their commissioned work is brilliant, but as far as their personal work is concerned, the work that nobody was meant to see, it's trash. If painters didn't need to live off commissions for all those centuries we would have had Jackson Pollock in the 18th century.
