Hey retard, the P in PEMDAS that stands for parenthesis only refers to numbers IN THE PARENTHESES. After that step the equation should read 48/2*12 which gets solved left to right.

Depending on whether one interprets the expression as (48/2)(9+3) or as 48/(2(9+3)) one gets 288 or 2. There is no standard convention as to which of these two ways the expression should be interpreted, so, in fact, 48/2(9+3) is ambiguous. To render it unambiguous, one should write it either as (48/2)(9+3) or 48/(2(9+3)). This applies, in general, to any expression of the form a/bc : one needs to insert parentheses to show whether one means (a/b)c or a/(bc).

Flawed systems are to thank for this. You wouldnt be mad at a computer for having faulty programming. Youd blame the programmer. Same thing applies here. With the memetic devices used to remember functions, teachers didnt teach correctly.
If you just learned PEMDAS, then the answer is 2, and thats correct in most elementary schools eyes. 9+3 is 12, that times 2 is 24, which divides into 48 to become 2.

While we know that this is wrong, most will defend this.

Now, the correct way to do PEMDAS is (p)(e)(m>left to right>d)(a>left to right>s). Now with this we can get the right answer.
48/2(9+3), 9+3 is 12. Now there is only multiplication, and division, which is done left to right.
48/2 is 24, 24×12 is 288.

Well it's not exactly ambiguous unless it has a multitude of answers to it. This one only has two, in which it's acceptable to just assume which one to do first based on how it's written (so if the problem had the 48 over a horizontal line above the 2(3+9), then you could assume it's 2)

To this particular equation, yes. It is right to assume it's 288 due to the structure. However, if the equation looked like:

2(9+3)

Note that the reason you are get different answers from mathway and google calculator is that the algorithms they use for parsing input are different. This is not the case, and is therefore why the two's answers differ.

and oh look, it even gives the same answer when i put 48÷2*(9+3) as input instead of 48/2*(9+3)

Again my dude in today's age it is totally valid to interpret / as ÷ and call it a day, and while in most cases it will work out just fine clearly there are situations where it won't.
