When you press on the pedal the clutch is "in", when your foot is entirely off the pedal the clutch is "out".
So what you do is put the clutch all the way in, get the accelerator up and gently let off the clutch while giving the car more gas. You'll feel the clutch bite the other friction plate, when that happens, keep letting the clutch out and giving the vehicle more gas. It's all based on feel and muscle memory and comfort level with the car.
