you can get most of the bioms pretty close to the KSC, the ones you can't what ever it's faster and easier to use a rocket, besides if you do it right the rocket will be cheaper than a plane in terms of parts so you break even.
I use gliders or small planes for Eve Duna Layth and Jool but I only get Kerbin science if it's convenient or I need some extra science.

it was an unmanned probe, I tried a manned glider that would dip into jool, get science than detach wings and fly back into orbit but bad things happened and the kerbal ended up on bop with no hope of getting back
