Well, they had some. Moslty MGs like the Vickers and the Germans had the MG42, IIRC. I remember the Vickers being called a coffee grinder because it ground up any enemy charges like so many coffee beans or some shit like that. But automatic weapons weren't used on anything other than a squad level until well after the war. They were so stupid heavy, unweildly and complex that they pretty much had to be crew-served and weren't easily man-portable.

Well, when you cinsider how influencal the war was, it did little to nothing to the world order. It made the failed league of nations, led to the great depression, and set up a broken treaty that lead to ww2. The actual warfare is not as important as the causes and effects of the war. Not much caused it, and not much came of it so it is barely mentioned.

I'm Canadian and my history classes throughout elementary and junior high focused on it to the point of excess and utterly ignored the second world war, 1812, the American Revolution, 'Nam, modern middle easter wars, the Rwandan genocide and the mass removals of kebab. I always found it ridiculous, although the Great War was probably a very important war to Canada. It was the first war we fought in as an independent power of sorts and we made huge accomplishments and strides that no other force at the time did, like being the very first to survive and subsequently retaliate against a gas attack, not to mention taking Vimy.
