The reason a carbine is better than a shotgun for HD is basically because it's going to be simpler to operate (assuming you're not buying a semi-automatic shotgun, which will probably be somewhat more expensive than you want to pay for) in an actual HD scenario. Not having to cycle the pump action is just one less thing you have to worry about in that high-pressure situation. Also, obviously, the rifle has more rounds since really I'm basically recommending either an ar or an ak or some equivalent intermediate round with a standard magazine.
