Yeah, the managers were the fucking worst. There were cameras all over the store just for watching the employees - they never once caught a customer stealing. But if you twirled a pen idly while waiting there were no customers at your register because you had already stocked and cleaned everything? That's a write-up.
After graduating I got a job at a tech start-up where the board of directors embezzled a bunch of money and lied to the employees: so that job stopped existing after a year and a half.
And now I'm working for a multinational CDN in a big corporate job. And I fucking hate it. There was an "all company retreat" a few weeks ago and during the award ceremony I noticed that all 12 awards they handed out went to the 12 upper managers of the company. No awards for middle management or for people on the bottom. We're literally faceless cogs while the people above us take all the credit and make 20x larger paychecks
Can't blame them for taking advantage of a broken system, though. I personally blame the baby boomers for all of this generation's problems. They managed to single-handedly ruin an entire nation by borrowing (pronounced: stealing) from their children and securing their own retirement before their own future.

I like you, you understand this shit quite well. It's why I despise large corporations so damn much. I want to get into auto, and open up my own garage one day. Even if I don't make a hell of a lot, I would have myself getting paid even $5 an hour more than my lowest employee. Treat the employees amazingly, and they'll bust their ass for you. Treat them like how you said (IE: Everywhere) and you end up with a workforce that would slit your neck for a fucking Klondike bar.

Which is precisely why we're in this current economic situation. That, and investors are the worst thing to ever happen to the stock market. But take a look at any multi-billion dollar corporation. There was a time when people found a company they liked and worked there for 40 years. Now after 1 year people are so pissed off they leave and find a new job. That rate of turnover isn't NATURAL. Humans LOVE routine. We invented agriculture so we could stop wandering and start sitting in the same place every day for years on end. It's not NORMAL to leave a job after a year, people are just so pissed off that it's their only recourse.
The multi-billion dollar corporations consist of a few people in the top who have held their position for 20 years, and a bunch of people on the bottom who have worked there for 1 year and are ready to leave so they don't try hard. This means a lot of money wasted on recruiting and training and very little actual productivity or economic output.
Do you have ANY idea how fast our internet would be or how seamless and perfect our software would be if we could keep a small set of developer dedicated to a project for more than 6 months? But even Google - the world leader in software - they have a different team working on their search algorithm every year. Each time they have to spend MONTHS learning what the hell the people before them were doing and learn the project before they can write a line of code, and then it's mostly one-line changes with months of testing to be sure it didn't break anything instead of massive feature-add
I'm currently working for corporate 9-5 on Monday through Friday, but evenings and weekends I'm running a business. To this day (two years in) I haven't paid myself a penny from the business account. It has all been free work: but I've been able to employ one person and soon a second, and the business is profitable despite zero outside investment.

I worked for 4 weeks at a warehouse, was offered no training, no instruction, no room for advancement.
The owners kept trying to push us to get more and more product out but would immediately run back to their offices.
They would try and impress us with all the money they spent on their warehouse, and not a penny went toward their employee's comfort.

How are you going to NOT train your employee and immediately discipline them for not doing the job fast enough?
