SHAVING..
This is essential. DO NOT use cheap plastic razors. Invest in a double edge safety razor. You'll save money AND you'll only have to ever buy one for the rest of your life.

I bought a 34c Merkur DE Safety Razor.
A tube of Proraso shaving cream
100 x Feather (the best) Blades
And an Omega shaving brush
I use a cheap cereal bowl to lather-up.

THE best shave I have ever had. Do it /bro's, you'll never regret it.

Is it good for sensitive skin? I get the worst shaving rash just thinking about a razor. Tried all the shave oils, balms you name it.

Use a slant bar razor

Use a boar hair brush, I prefer semogue

Use shaving soap, not cream

Buy a blade sample pack and try everything, you will find your favorite blade

Make sure to use a good aftershave

Represent it's so fucking cheap, my grandfather's razor, an old ass gilette and works better then some one I bought online and is kind of neat and nostalgic I guess using something so old. I use some soap my girl bought me for my birthday it's from something in Bond Street in London its popular for their products. Sandalwood flavored and smells like man scent, like can't explain just plain man from like 30 years ago not some crazy strong smell just real basic. Blades are dirt cheap and I get tons of use out of them

To people who want to try something without forking out too much cash, those of us in the US can go to bath and body works. Their C.O. Bigelow shaving cream is repackaged proraso, and you can get a travel tube for $5, it'll last a couple months of daily use. It has eucalyptus and menthol, so its great for summer.

You need to try different blades. I have serious facial hair and I do fine after I found the right blade. Thick hair could use sharper blades with a light touch like the feathers op mentioned. (Too much pushing/forcing the blade like with a cartridge will give you serious razor burn.) A good shaving cream is important, too. It does take effort to get these right but when you do, you get an amazing shave for pennies.

the only utility i see for this thread is to aware people on how to shave off their neckbeards. i can't imagine someone on /b/ being interested in shaving. there are good forums for that.

anyway, merkur makes some shitty safety razors compared to older, TTO or more expensive models. EJ and Gillette Super Speed are good alternatives, with Gillette being cheaper.

omega brushes are legit but also not really necessary. you can use a safety razor with any shaving cream.

and you can't go wrong with Astra SP blades. don't forget to dry the blade off and they will last longer. rather than saving money on cheap blades, you will have less moments where you realize that you would have gotten a better shave if you had changed the blade sooner.

Perfect if you don't have a lot of time. I can shave dry with it and its not bad

>>692479160
I have very strong hair and very sensitive skin. That said. I am currently trying a cheaper Bic razor and I don't like it. I have a couple nicks on my throat from its aggressive razor. I usually use a tri blade of a good brand. Try it. The basic rules are:
1. treat razor with the same respect as a non-disposable.
2. Shave after shower when face has no dirt that would dull razor.
3. soap face to make shaving smoother and keep bacteria from building up on razor (otherwise will cause skin irritation after a few shaves)
4. Never tap razor into sink to clean out razor.
5. rinse frequently. Don't allow hair to build up
6. keep an old toothbrush around to clean out your razor if need be. Wipe off on towel after shaving
7. Dont keep in a bowl of olive oil as some would suggest. This doesn't really help from my experience. The razor will not oxidize if kept clean.
Honestly I have been doing this for a year. I have experimented with several brands and several techniques because I live in a country where it is very hard to get any other type of razor. I wanted to try both straight edge and safety but after trying this I found that there isn't any need. If I can go through half a dozen razors in a year then it is so cheap there is just no reason... except how cool the other types are... which definitely tempts me. I would love to have an antique safety or a few beautiful straight edge.

Seriously, you are very wrong. I have very tough and very thick facial hair. Incidentally I also have sensitive skin. Because of this I have to soak my face very well before shaving. If I dry shave I would rip my skin off. Don't mock. This isn't that sort of thread. I was just sharing my own experiences. I do love the style of safety razors but as far as frugality goes it doesn't add up for me, not when I can go so long with a disposable.

I have a beard but I use this for my neck and cheek lines. I paid under $20 for a new old stock 1968 Gillette. $14 for 100 blades (literally several years worth), 40 for a tub of cream and 70 for a brush. Under $150 for 2-3 years worth compared to spending about $300 a year on mach3

I will get my hand on some eventually. Until then at least I found a good way of saving money on disposables. The math on disposables for most men is terrible. Some cost $2 per blade and a man might use it three times. That adds up to over 120 per year, $240. That is just ridiculous. Frugality is intelligence. Only morons laugh at saving $200 per year.

The current shaving trend is to spend more money than you have to. A couple of points:

1) You can start shaving with a safety razor for under $20. That's the tool and the blades.
2) There is less waste involved.
3) If you can't get a good shave with a safety razor, chances are you are shaving in the wrong directions at the wrong angle.

Bought some merkur thingy a few years ago, but most of the time I'm just too lazy to use that thing and just grow a bear or shave with an electric trimer. It's not a close shave, but it takes about 15 sec.

Wet shaving takes like 15 minutes and you have to do it all again 2 or 3 days later.

So do I. TOBS Sandalwood / Jerimyn Street sensitive skin. But I prefer their sandalwood soap because I find that it lasts a long time and doesn't get gunky / lose scent.

But again, it's cheaper than buying cans of the gillette gel stuff, which actually works quite well for me. But it may turn off some people to hear that they need to buy a $15 brush and $15 cream just to enjoy their new razor.

Merkur might make some good razors, but the cheaper ones have never worked well for me. There was a huge quality gap when I switched to a $15 Gillette red tip Super Speed.

I'm 29, I started using these when I was 19, way before they were trendy, way before you could start finding them in the local supermarket.
I use a 50's gillette adjustable.
I do use a bowl and brush sometimes, but you can use a regular bar of hand soap, get some good bubbles going with your hands, and lather up like that, the bowl and brush is not always necessary.
As for the blades, the cheapo ones at kroger work fine.
>>
>>692478804
Some Disposables are sharpenable to a limited extent, and DE blades are easily sharpened and stropped to a very satisfactory edge several times each, as long as you don't take off more metal than is needed with a 150x40mm whetstone/hard-arkansas/other grinding wheel roller that is Only used for your razors. If you need to correct the surface slow grind the wheel true with a diamond lapping plate, diamond dust, and lapping oil.

Any wire edge built up on a disposable razor's edge cannot be removed with a leather strop as you cannot remove the blades. Sharpen them after each use, but only a very little and no wire edge will be formed. Manually sharpening DE razor blades is easy if you have a proper based angle slip of Teflon, UHMW-PE, glazed porcelain, or glass to align the razor on the wheel. In 30 seconds I sharpen both sides of a DE razor and it's good for another week. The stone sits below my lather bowl, brush, and razor on a trivet to keep it dry. I haven't bought a new set of blades in several years. My whiskers are thick and dark and could be used as a record needle if needed.

everything is about image. People laugh if you say you save money. They buy the most expensive cellphone, shoes, jeans, watch, etc, just so they can say they have the most expensive. It is so funny to me. Some day they will lose a job or have medical needs, and be flay broke because of all their wastefulness. How is this so funny to them. Frugality really is a sign of intelligence. How is wastefulness something to brag about? I want a safety razor some day for two reasons. A. they are frugal. B. They are beautiful. To me finding something like that is a real treasure. It is like buying a BMW for the price of a Ford.

Sounds expensive and time consuming. I don't like high maintenance. If I had a safety razor I would probably buy packs of 500 blades. I also shave my head (no, Im not a skinhead) so I would want my razors to be simple, not require care in use, and not have dangers of cutting me. This is another reason I like my disposables. >>
>>692481959
Not that bullshit.

Pic related is a sharpening stone on its side.
You'll notice there's a clear line through the middle, with one side being rougher, and one side much smoother.

You'll also notice the rough side is worn down much more than the smooth side.

This isn't the exact stone you'd use for a razor, it's far too short, but as an example to answer your question it works

Start on the rough side, then the smooth side, then a strop, which is a strap of leather.

by sending it away i meant to somebody who has those stones and can sharpen it for you. you dont have to actually send it to japan.

sharpening a blade is not a simple skill. you have to do it in a specific angle and you have to sharpen the blade similar on both sides or you make it dull.

also you dont have to use japanese wet stones. i was just writing what i use. the important thing is: NEVER sharpen a razor on a sharpening machine thats what i wanted to say

Don't listen to someone that recommends buying 100 blades that you've never tried. You won't have any comparison point.

Here is the most frugal option, and by the way, this razor is pristine as far as I can tell.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1975-W-4-Gillette-Flare-Tip-Super-Speed-TTO-Safety-Razor-With-Blades-/231991651025?hash=item3603c7aad1:g:YPMAAOSwmtJXXBuz

http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-Sampler-double-edge-razor-blades-FEATHER-POLSILVER-GSB-Red-IP-polsilver-Astra-/252423578738?hash=item3ac59e2472:g:6uYAAOSw~gRVzhBY

Dry the blade off afterwards and you should be able to get around 4 shaves with each of those blades. More than enough to tell if it's going to tug, or if your razor is not right for you.

Refer to the attached chart for shaving directions. You should go with the arrow, and diagonal for a closer shave. That means you can go any direction. For an easy reference polint, just hold the razor sideways or at a 45-degree angle for the second pass.

That applies to the jawline, not the neck.
>>
>>692485260
Because they pull the hairs and shave below the skin occasionally.

Ingrown hairs are not conducive to a good shave.
>>
>>692485704
Sharpening a blade is a simple skill.
It requires accuracy, and understanding of the kind of blade you're working on, but when it comes to a razor edge, it's simple as fuck.

Rough-smooth-strop
Once it's at strop point, you just strop it everytime before and after use and you.wont need a stone for a long time.

Look at the wear on the stone I posted...
I know about sharpening blades.

I tried all this shit OP, yeah it's a bit cheaper but it's also a colossal pain in the arse. The shave is slower, it's easier to cut yourself when you're in a rush and while the shave is marginally closer, it's barely noticeable.

The entire relative world has had razor sharpness for a.long time, Japan is irrelevant to razor sharpness.

Don't waste your money on mythical bullshit.

>tfw no one ever taught me how to shave
>I just go over it with an electric trimmer until my stubble is under 1mm

I mean, I've used plain multi blade razors before and done so with enough success, but I tend to avoid it because they're expensive to replace and I don't use them properly enough to avoid irritation.
>>
>>692486604
everyone here is telling you to get good shit and that you wont regret it. thats the good shit

theyre also telling you that its cheaper than conventional razors. its not. the $200 is referring to straight razors, which if you knew anything at all about straight razors, you would know that you couldnt even begin to find a usable straight razor for under $200. good attempt at trying to make me sound like an idiot by trying to get people to think i was talking about safety razors there. it would have worked if everyone in this thread couldnt read

Any number of blades greater than 1 has a chance to pull a hair. So I guess you could say that the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th blade has a chance to cut the hair too close or pull it out entirely.

Cutting a hair or pulling it partially out of the follicle greatly increase the risk for ingrown hairs and ultimately infection.

I think you are equating "closer shave" to "better shave" here, which was not my intention.

I do that too.

24 heads for $28. 1 head should last 4 weeks unless you're just shit at shaving. That's 2 years of shaving for $28. These things easily compete with pro glide. Don't get more than 4 blades, and realistically you'd probably be okay with 3. The handle is $5.50. http://dorcousa.com/razors-men/ Pace 4, but all Dorco heads are compatible with all Dorco handles.

kek, faggot detected

buy yourself a razor sample pack. certain razors feel different on my face. some are cheaper than others, some are chrome, stainless steel, thin, forgiving, unforgiving, etc. I bought a sample pack with 15 different brands and stuck with one. bought 100 razors for $11. that's roughly 2 fresh blades a week (overkill, really) for an entire year. $11 might get you two Mach 3 or Quatro blade cartidges. it's a scam.
>>
>>692482860

Are you saying someone that has never tried riding a bike cannot learn to quite simply?

I'll answer for you...
>YES, that's exactly what I said

A skill being simple doesn't mean anyone can do it without any knowledge on it, but if you have answer blade to sharpen, all.all . you need is a sharpening stone, (and internet searches if you can't figure it out)

Cavemen learnt if you rub and stick against rock, the stick wears down and gets sharp.

It's not rocket science anon

the cartridge system is a scam. more blades per stroke equals more irritation. they "fix" the problem that they create with moisturizer strips and other gimmicky bullshit. a good double edge razor is probably all you need.

>>
>>692487863
You have no point, because there is nobody arguing against you.

More surface area across multiple blades would in theory reduce pressure on the skin in front of and behind the blade. Additionally those blades will catch hairs and shave the remainder. You've seen the Gillette commercials enough to make fun of them but don't seem to understand their marketing campaign.

You're a fucking dumbass if you still haven't figured out that I don't use cartridge razors.

>>
>>692489394
Fixed blades on a rigid square base.
Pressure is applied by your arm, not by individual blades.

Explain how one blade has more.pressure than the on following it?
The entire.frame.is pushed against your face.

Seems.youre the one that doesn't understand that disposable razor.marketing is targeted at retards.

They started with single blade saying it.gave a.close shave, then do u keep blades became a thing...
Now a second blade can shave off what that first blade we claimed.shaved everything didn't get....

Then 3, then 4...

You don't see a problem there?

Why do you think there aren't kitchen knives with a blade above the blade to cut the stuff that the first blade didn't cut?

Because.if the first blade didn't cut it, it's a shit blade.
>>
>>692475249
Go for a Straight Razor, it`s the best if you are n a hurry, but also, is the most dangerous.
Trust me, they are equal to yours, only a different grip and velocity.
>>
>>692490780

You shouldn't be pushing against your face. You should have next to no pressure on your skin. The movement is over the skin and the "pressure" comes from hair against the blade.

I only.said that in response to previous anon saying each blade having more or less pressure.

I had to start shaving at 12, I know how it is.
Let the blade do the work, but disposable razors don't work that way.
