Theyre pretty similar in gameplay and goals. Im pretty sure they're made by the same people
Terraria is less grind oriented than Starbound and is much better PvE. It's much easier to progress when you don't have to go from planet to planet trying to find one specific biome.

There was a big sense of loss from Wrath to Cata. Wrath had it's issues, but it gave us one of the best raids in game - Ulduar - and some fun in Icecrown.
Cata started off STRONG. The quests were good, the new world was sorta interesting.
But then nothing. Two prepared raids (Uldum and the underwater one) never eventuated.
One of the four content patches was just reworked troll dungeons. No raid, no nothing. 2 months of nothing.
And then Raid Finder, which is awful. Completely removed the sense of community that Dungeon Finder already wounded.
Why leave the major city, ever?
That said, Garrisons were a mighty leap even further down that shithole direction
