VA anon here again. I made a name for myself when Machinima was just getting big. All the freelancers I worked with became professionals and I had a reputation for solid quality work with amazing turn around time. I also have a good baritone voice with crazy good range. While vocal mimicking, singing, and pitch matching are all developed skills that are rooted in just...raw talent (I guess. Too many cartoon s in the 80s), I also study languages for the sake of doing accents.
Being a good freelance voice actor means you have to be a 1 stop shop kinda man. Can you write? Direct? Do QA work on other tracks? Mix audio? Sing? Compose a little? Can you do project management? Over 5 years I developed these.
I don't do VA work fulltime, but I make decent scratch while working a normal 9 to 5 job in data analytics. Doesn't mean my work is sub par, thankfully. I've done voices in several well known moba style games, mobile gaming, indie movie trailers, political ads, radio intros and closers, etc etc.
A lot of your solid success will come from networking. That's the hard truth of it.
