Well, I guess you are starting off with paper and pencil, which is fine. Start with working on simple design characters. Trying to get the flow of proportions and size down. There are lots of easy to find tutorials out there.

You're going to suck when you first start... it's unavoidable. However, once you really start to get down the concept of basic anatomy and spacing, the rest you can start to work on to give your art more depth.

It's kind of hard to give tips when I have no idea what you can do as of now. Plus, most "good" artist will have some type of formal training. It's not needed, but if you don't really know what you need, because you are so new, I'm not totally sure what to direct you with.

But the emotions really are what draws me into the fandom, for some reason they just look so good on anthropomorphic cartoons, which is really fucked to say, but whatever. The hyper realistic looking drawings just seem so weird though, too animal like, not enough human.

I would think one of the keys to drawing emotion in something like this is to recognize the nearly-universal body language animals share, and learn to learn to draw it on a less-than-human face. Curiosity, anger, disgust, happiness, they all have the same basic clues in people, dogs, monkeys, rodents, etc
It doesn't even have to be complex to work
