I like my bolt action Lee Enfield, bought it off an old guy who used it in WW2, it's fun to play with, but the .306 gets more practical use, puts meat in the freezer.

Yeah, I'm in a pretty rural area. Not really much risk of crime, and I'm Canadian. So the risk of someone breaking into my house who has a gun is pretty damned low. I wouldn't even consider pulling out one of my guns for self/home defense, 2 dogs with a combined weight of 300 lbs and a baseball bat is more than sufficient to deal with any chug that might work up the courage to smash a window.
If I lived in the city, I'd have a loaded pistol under my pillow, and one taped under ever counter in the house. Just in case, y'know.

Jasper is pretty nice, it's BC. the political border from BC to alberta runs along the mtn range, but Jasper is what virtually all of BC looks like, I'm in the fraser valley, east of vancouver.
If you like hiking/outdoorsy stuff, BC is the place to be. The fishing is the best in the world, catch a couple 25+ lb salmon each run, tons of trout. Hunting is really good, deer, elk, moose. And everywhere, just amazing scenery.

Managing recoil has a lot to do with being comfortable with a weapon.
