As someone who plays Tekken mostly I think it's about balance - although this is a hugely contentious issue.
In Tekken virtually any character can be ridiculously powerful if you master it, to the point it would seem unbalanced to most people.
Most franchises have a certain amount of trash characters or inconsistent performance on characters across iterations of the game.
Tekken suffers from that to some extend, as well.
Tekken also does not really have characters that 'automatically' beat others; I mean, there is a hint towards that, but it's more flexible than others games from my experience.
I'm not particularily critical of other fighting games.. I just play Tekken because I like it best.

I played Tekken for a while on PS2, and I agree, most characters are very nicely balanced, I also play Soul Calibur 4/5 semi competitively, but some characters in that are either extremely good, and others just seem to fall flat on their face. I mained Natsu in SC5 and I found it was really, really easy to juggle with her, and combos for getting people into the air was also quite easy to do, her being fast also helped.
But with smash, I think its one of the fighting games where it actually punishes you if you button mash, even the jabs have severe ending lag (except for shiek, like fuck)
Most fighting games have either just a meta or an actual tier list of who is just overall a better character.
Say if Sonic, the fastest character in the game, and usually played in a rushdown kinda way, was vs the Villager, which is a really campy. projectile heavy game, although Sonic is horrible against projectiles, he is so much faster than Villager and can get to the other side of the stage before villager can even launch an attack.
I see what you mean, but it doesn't mean smash isn't a proper fighting game, there is an insane amount of technique and timing involved with some of the advanced tech that pro players do.

The shit characters in Smash 64 had more options to cover weaknesses
Smash 4 has been been getting balance patches for the past 2 years and at this point is a PRETTY balanced game. Yes there are still the shit characters but there only about ~10 of them out of ~60 characters.
PM is decently balanced too. Not as balanced as Smash 4, but still fairly balanced
Melee honestly isn't the best balanced game in the series, but out of 25 characters about ~12 are viable but the unviable or shit characters just don't have anything to cover their weaknesses

I sort of understand. Tekken usually has some less serious characters, that still work more or less well but work very differently, while it's not a diverse game on the whole.
It has an incredible technical complexity, but fundamentally the characters are all rather similar and equal.
I'm not sure how fun competitive Tekken is.
Probably no fun at all, because you fail one block or interrupt and it's gg.
Smash might be more interesting and varied in that respect.

It shows in the fact you can play very differently with many characters without really doing anything wrong.
Learning the priority of moves is quite a chore, but necessary to be fully effective.
It's why I like Ling Xiaoyu.
She has a good amount of the fastest moves, so I'm all like

It helps if you stick to one character only and check the movelist every now and then.
Xiaoyu could be quite complex with her stances and so many low moves.
I played mostly Brian because his movelist is balanced and there are a million launchers.
