One of the greatest metal albums of all time
Ok here's a bit of a post but it's something me and a friend were talking about today.
We love the music, but the metal scene is one of the most despicable scenes out there. There's always this essence in the scene where you need to 'out metal' other people be it by judging their hair or beard, their drinking tastes, or mainly their music, and the rise of Deathcore / metalcore / corecore which granted I don't like, but each to their own gets slated on by the mainstream netal scene. Bands like BMTH, Asking Alexandria, Of Mine and Men etc - and again, I personally don't like them, but at least it's something new. YET every weekend when I'm at the standard bar there's ALWAYS some fat ass greebo metalhead guy with his Iron Maiden jacket chatting shit about 'real metal' is dying with all this 'pussy metal' bands and won't stfu about how Iron Maiden are the best thing ever. There's just this horrible stigma that makes me not want to identifed as a metal head as the generic term is that I'm an elitist prick who listens to nothing but Slipknot and Iron Maiden (2 bands I don't care for in the slightest) and that I think all other music genres are shit - Because thats what most of the scene are like. I love me some old school hip, trance and DnB gets me pumped as fuck, but you CANNOT speak around this near metalheads because it's "not real music" and it's just embarrassing how ignorant the scene is.
Here's a good example. I live in Birmingham UK, there's 1 alternative night called Eddies, it's fucking dire. The playlist is the most generic shitfest you can think off, and I gather that's what they need to play to get people, but GOD it is boring - and again I don't mind most of the songs but mix it up!

There's also a club night called Uprawr, it plays hardcore, some deathcore, and mostly pop punk, and it gets hated on so much by the metal scene because "it's all BMTH kids" but I have much MUCH more fun there because there's a better vibe, people are there to have fun (even though I have no idea what they're playing) and not there to try and be all EUGGHH METAL 4 LYF, LETS ALL DRINK BEER AND TALK ABOUT METAL.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks the metal scene is cringe worthy sometimes? You meet some great people within the scene, but it's mostly fat greebos who need to be METAL. You get the odd few, and this thread has made me happy to see a lot of different, more diverse bands like Swallow the Sun, Shade Empire, Dissection, etc. Because there is some great fucking music out there, but to me, the majority of the scene only cares about the classics and hating on anything new because it's not 'real metal'

I... kind of agree. What you say is true but the metal scene has its good sides too. Ever been to a metal concert? The atmosphere is awesome, the people are friendly and fun. Mosh pits and walls of death are good immature fun, there's just something childishly pleasing about lining up and running headlong into other people for the hell of it. And it shows something how as soon as you fall down, you're picked back up by like 5 other people to keep going. We have a weird kind of loyalty that I like, metalheads (at least, in my experience) just instantly bond whenever they meet and I like that. More than once I've had cars stop or pull over to talk to me when they saw my walking around in my Watain shirt.
Also, we're one of the genres that prizes technical musical skill more than most of the others out there.

I am lukewarm towards that band. I enjoy Norse and Viking culture and imagery, and I am a little mad at them being so damn corny about it, especially with their most recent album (I guess that's what sells). From Versus the World to Twilight of the Thunder God it was good, tasteful, surprisingly authentic Norse-themed melodeath that I liked. Everything on either side of that, though, pretty much devolves into "BLOOD AND GUTS AND MUH VIKIIIIIIINNNNNGGGSSSSSSSS".

I've been to so so so many gigs now, I've got a list somewhere and seen nearly every band I've wanted to. I do totally get what you're saying and at gigs the atmosphere is crazy good and you really get into it, and it does happen. I met some Swedes at Hellfest last year, and random people in pits who didn't even speak English, festival was in France but still! so much fun, such a good fucking week.
It is just those who are still stuck in this METAL IS MY LIFE mentality that is so cringy. I get that, it's THE important music genre to you, but there's other shit to life. I love seeing those guys who look normal as fuck, but turns out they're into Black Metal or something and look like an accountant, because they love the music, but realise that the entire looking like something from LOTR, can't do that all the time.
