Castle assaults can either be really good or really bad depending on how good you alone are, you've gotta get good at just giving out and taking hard hits so your men don't have to, if you can be the first one up the ladder and just slaughter all the defenders on one section of the wall your men should be able to get the other section, then you've gotta charge down to the court yard and just start wiping out waves of enemies. If you're not literally covered in blood by the end of the battle you're not doing it right.

I was doing a good job sniping at them but was seperate from my infantry, and at some point the AI had all its infantry charge.
I didn't manage to hold out long enough for my infantry to catch up.
I generally try to avoid being caught in massed melee, but it's just a habit from the horse archery.
