And having the guy bleed out was good - I'm a firm believer in having the party's ridiculous actions come with sensible consequences. More than once the players were muttering at each other when I used the backstories they provided, and made them relevant. Wife was playing the dragon's mate (a half-dragon) and got multiple shocked looks about three sessions in, when they saw the kid that she had mentioned during character creation and in their introductions.
