What people always do is make their characters absolutely perfect and good at everything. If we look at some of the most popular characters, however, we see that they are deeply flawed in one way or another. Making something interesting means giving it balance. Sure they can be the best in their field, but that means giving them something haunting or broken to balance. Take my girl for example. She's an incredibly skilled pilot. But she's a member of a very small group of people in outward appearance. I don't want to say racism is prevalent in her world but when you've got ears like what she has it draws notice. It's all these different aspects working in unison that make something interesting and relatable

You're oversimplifying a rather complex subject. It's not what someone is good or bad at that makes them interesting, it's the interactions of their good and bad as well as the interactions with the environment. Using my girl as an example again, she's a pilot for a private security firm. Her skill as a pilot makes sense to the setting I've put her in. But just having her be an ace pilot is boring and wouldn't draw attention. This is why, among other things, I've added a deep seeded sense of racism in parts of the Galaxy. It creates conflict and interaction that give the reader some substance to actually chew on
