Now, I've never talked to someone about the fandom outside the fandom so take this with a grain of salt, but I think if you want to share this with your SO you have to do it right. Namely don't leave it up to them to do the research. If they Google it themselves... that will not end well and first impressions stick. I'd say if you can take a bit of time to show him some of the things you like (artwork, pictures, community, etc.) and EXPLAIN it then it should go fine. And if he's not understanding that's a problem. Not because the lack of shared interest, but because he should respect and appreciate your passions.
