The US brought fatal accidents down to 32,000 as of 2014. Vehicles are getting safer and safer, with automatic braking, better crumple zones and energy redistribution, automatic braking, etc. while still allowing the driver to have the majority of the control over the vehicle. That number will only go down in time, and the youth is getting better and better educated on drunk/distracted driving and deaths associated have been dropping as well. I guess my point is it wouldn't be too hard to create a generation of educated drivers driving safe automobiles while still being able to enjoy driving. (Granted, not everyone likes driving. I personally believe autonomous vehicles and user operated vehicles will operate on the road in beautiful harmony)

I'm pretty sure drunk drivers are fully aware of the dangers they are partaking in. And you're never going to get rid of idiots who don't belong on the road. Besides, as you mention, the reason that cars are getting safer is because a lot of control is being taken from the driver (automatic braking, lane departure correction, etc.) so... you're basically arguing for an autonomous vehicle already.

Drunk driving is becoming a thing of the past. Though it is still very dangerous today, more people are wising up and not taking the risk. Ride sharing is going to make these numbers drop even more considerably in the following years. A failed driving education system is to blame for a vast majority of the foolhardy drivers on the road. It's their responsibility, but when you can pass a drivers exam with practically no real drivers education to back it, then who is to blame, the driver (partially) or the system who allowed them to get/maintain a licence?
Also I'm not so sure I'd count those features as "a lot of control" but their presence is significant in the difference between having an accident and not having one. I am totally in favor of minor driving assists and I can see myself buying a vehicle with such assists in the future. All I'm saying is I think a beautiful compelling albeit mildly dangerous craft will be dead as the cause of these computer cars. That might just benefit society but loving cars is hardwired into my brain and you don't love your car without being able to use the thing.

That's always the biggest pain in the ass. I work with a guy like that.
