It sounds crazy but one time when I was 15 and I went on a late night walk to unwind and smoke a joint, but I kept seeing a shadow in the moonlight at the time I was completely fucking stoned and wasn't feeling that kinda pot-induced-paranoia so I didn't care at about 30 mins into my walk I finally could see this weird dude in a raincoat (even though it was the middle of summer and hadn't rained in 2 weeks) with a large brim hat just standing by this tree motionless. After seeing him I noped it the fuck out of there, I didn't really ever go to those woods again even though it might have been just a hallucination.

I've toodled around a lot of forests here in N. Illinois, it's cool as fuck what you can find. Right in the freaking middle of Crystal Lake, there is a small patch of forest, back there is the remains of an old farm house like 500 feet from the highway that I think I may be about the only person around even knows exists any more. It's amazing how many ruins of buildings you can find buried everywhere, really makes you wonder how it all wound up forest instead of developed further in some random places.

The place I found the old farms was in the dense patch south of willow road, pic related, it's sorta in Northbrook. The one I initially found is pretty visible at the top, also note the two roads that lead nowhere. The remains of a bridge over the creek are about a 1/2 mile inland from the south road. Forest to the south is like a jungle, only paths were left by deer, so plenty of deer ticks.
There seem to be plenty more old farms north into Lake County but we spent like 3 hours trapped in the section to the south.

Cook County is pretty developed so it wasn't hard to narrow down the places. I used the link above to basically follow the modern forest up and down about ten miles. I then stitched the images together and superimposed them over google earth. I then marked down locations that were not developed (Tri-state and subdivisions took up a lot of land).
Even with this it was still pretty hard to find them in the woods, you lose all sense of direction. It's probably even harder for non-Cook County since most of the old roads in the 1930s no longer exist, I at least could look at old Milwaukee Ave for guidance. I've only explored the Willow Road section, there's dozens of potential sites in Lake County

Some are hard to find and some are dangerous, fun times though. I missed out on a old asylum in the middle of nowhere, traveled two days and the cops were there. It was being torn down and developed and people were breaking in for one last adventure.

Most places I visit have very little population, but some places wind up on ghost hunters and shit. I usually hunt down places that can't be found on the Internet. A little trick I learned is to pick towns that were happening big in the 20's but burnt out, the libraries have maps and info, even old deeds and shit. Local cops don't care or don't know if it's obscure enough. Once a place becomes popular it's a nightmare to go in. The worst I've done is go inside an asylum that was part of a decaying property, which still had an active asylum campus. It was strange and cops drive through often. I didnt see anything but i heard it breathing pretty close to me louder an louder. Also, we were all well aware we had to be damn-near silent because the crop of trees was fairly close to the main office of the camp. Anyway, none of us talked about it, except briefly after we were out of the woods walking back to the cabin. He swears it was black, just black, and the biggest man he'd ever seen standing next to the tree about 15 ft directly behind where I was sitting.
I think it was a black bear, but I dont think I ever actually heard any footsteps, and there was decent leaf coverage on the ground... Still gives me chills recounting it.
