I'm on SSI too due to mental illness, I do have my own place. I get laid when I want because I met a woman who was going through a bad marriage and I let her stay with me and she puts out when I want her to. She also works and gives me 25% per paycheck. It's been 13 months since she's moved in and I have no complaints.

I get the maximum amount from SSI due to my illness ($735). I rent an apartment that the rent is only $415 and it's in a good area (apartment is privately owned by a family who bought the building from a bank). Water is free (so no sewer and plenty of hot water) I just buy filters for the water I want to drink. I also get food stamps instantly because I am on SSI. I pay for internet which is $77. Electricity is around on average less than $30 but during cold and hot days it bounces around but I try to be disciplined about that. (I can walk you through that in another post if you want energy saving tips)
So after my rent, and the bills I have $200 of spending money. Plus with the woman who lives with me giving me 25% per paycheck that equals to around on average $200 of extra income giving me $400 dollars of spending money. I use that money for things we need like more filters, decorative things, video game subscriptions and recently got myself a crock pot, pizza cooker (so I don't need to run the oven in this weather).

I went to a poor elementary school and it wasn't a big deal. Everyone wore ratty clothes. When I got into middle school and high school with the richer kids, I was remorselessly picked on. I got into so many fights that I'm lucky to have not been expelled. I always got blamed for starting them, but the first punch was nearly always thrown by the rich douche that was starting shit that day. I finally got a break when I was so fed up I kicked this kid in the head on the ground. No one told and no one messed with me after that, but I must have been in 15-20 fights before that.
I hate those rich fucking scumbags until this day. I am as wealthy or wealthier than the lot of them now, but I love when I see them in the papers for drug charges or whatever else. It's basically a long walk to becoming some kind of social fuck up especially if you live somewhere isolated.
I've seen it happen with quite a few other kids than me.
There are many factors that make you become ostracised by peers, clothing, food, possessions etc. I think the most important is, often you don't socially develop properly as you won't get to make friends outside of school and that's at an early age if your parents can't drive you and you're too young to catch the bus. Often you'll refuse social contact as you don't only feel out of your own comfort but like you won't be able to sustain friendship and you'll automatically refuse unknowingly as your parents have distilled it into you will and it saves the embarrassment of past experiences. Other parents will worry of you being a bad influence especially because of the signs that mark you out as poor.
The social aspect is lessened in urban areas you can socialise with other poor kids. That said I've never seen any of these of the smart poor ones grow up or realise their potential, they tend to fly in the same ever diminishing circles with the same diminutive people.

In not sure how it was for others, but for me it was extremely up-and-down. Every weekday the thing I looked forward to the most was going to school (I know for many kids their favorite part of the day is getting out of school). My freshman and sophomore years I didn't do any extra-curricular activities so I would get home at 3, find something to eat (I remember we didn't have much to eat so it was usually either sweet pickles or dry cereal), do my homework, and watch youtube vids on a 24 inch monitor. I didn't have many friends at school but just being around people made me feel alot better than being in a trailer home with my mom (who was in and out of minimum wage jobs). My junior and senior years I ended up doing track and photography club. I made a bunch more friends and we would even hangout after practice/shoots. I would get home at 7 or 8 each night and life was alot better for me. Also, I ended up sleeping over their houses alot on the weekends. Just separating myself from my situation at home made me 100x happier. Now I'm a junior at a 4-year college. Looking back on it I could say it was tough, but it made me have the drive to never want to go back to that type of situation ever again.
