up until then, VHS and Laser Disc used Dolby ProLogic, which was just stereo source, and the surround sound was mixed in a way that was able to be separated into the rear speakers (both rear left and rear right were the same audio). the center channel just used an algorithm to mix the left and right channels together and remove anything that was solely left and anything that was solely right. bass was just the bass frequencies of all of it together.
