This is the best 4chan has ever been and the worst b has ever been. But that's not much of an issue as 4chan culture is now mostly defined by pol rather than b. Anything notable from 4chan no longer comes from b. This board has adjusted into /trash/ essentially. Not necessarily a bad thing to have.
As well, mid-size boards are really starting to have a decent presence and individual culture and user base of their own.
Just read about it on Encyclopedia Dramatica. Just a different kind of idiocy at a different time. It's not something most of us miss, we just hate the majority of new forced memes and trends. I was a late 06-early 07 initiate, it was a lot of trash but less tranny porn at least.
Most of the fun stuff was on other boards
Old 4chan was fuckin great. Conversations everywhere. Some meaningful, others for no reason, but they were all worth participating in.
Something happened along the lines.
It wasn't rule changes, or mods, or anything like that.
The community changed.
It went from everyone understanding that this is the fucking internet, who gives a fuck, to internet somehow ties in to real life so we must act like it too.
Then you factor in Gen Z summer and various other summers, some leave, some stay, and then you have idk what the fuck to call them, but people who just don't align with the 4chan style and choose to stay here cause they think its "edgy" and want to be different, and tumblr's and reddits come in wanting to drive the wagon and bam. Neo-4chan.

The problem with new 4chin is that other people know about it. We used to be one of many small communities of weirdos who, for whatever reason, ended up on the same forum and generally were a group of like minded but diverse thinking participants. I don't know what happened to the other communities. YTMND is still around, to an extent, but similar tragedies befell them.
We're now a massive website full of thousands of voices and perhaps a million or more audience members. There are too many political and corporate shills (believe it or not, they aren't interested in selling you things, they're interested in unsettling your opinion about your government), there are too many underage b& faggots who think and spell at the third grade level, there are too many self-aggrandizing media whores, and there are too many "LOL I POST AN TROLL THRED LELELEL SO RANDUM XDD" shitposters.
It isn't that the site used to be "good." We've always been this uncoordinated, awkward, sociopathic bunch of loons who barely got along enough to post in a coherent thread. But we've entered this period where so many people know about this site that people use it like a promotional platform. It's killing us. We used to be anarchists and counter-culture nihilists. Now the site is a bunch of 16 year olds who've nothing better to do and Russian trolls who want to sow racial tension in the US. It's an awful lot like the period after radical cafés and bars of revolutionary Europe, when most countries shook off their monarchies, where we have these structures wherein radical thought used to happen, in its messy, uncompromising disharmony; but now it's a tourist trap where you buy cheap countryside wine for $8 a glass and get told "counter culture" taglines by a dude who wears a false French moustache and speaks with a chinese accent.
