Although your post contains a pic that I personally find over-sensationalizes a very important issue, I feel I should.....no.....must share my oral hygiene routine so that others here may benefit.

First, a waterpik is an ESSENTIAL tool for oral spelunking. Yes, I use that word because it's more fun to imagine yourself as a cave explorer when you brush your teeth. It's also important to have fun when doing mundane (but IMPORTANT) tasks but that's probably another post altogether. Anyway.......

You need to have a waterpik and use it every other evening before bed. Add a QUARTER of a TEASPOON of bleach to the water tank and use the waterpik first. Don't wear any clothes that are dark colored, as even the minute amount of bleach diluted in the water can stain clothes if it splashes (and oh, it will splash as my Nintendo Power Club shirt will attest to!)

Anyway, you should also have the standard floss/brush/toothpaste combo obviously. I prefer Sensodyne toothpaste because I find it to be the most effective brand for ME, PERSONALLY. You may want another brand. That's fine but I don't think Sensodyne is bested by any other brands.

Begin by using the waterpik (if its on a night you're supposed to use it). Afterwards, floss, THEN brush. You need to spend a minute on each "quadrant" of your mouth (molars, front teeth, incisors, etc.) DO NOT FORGET TO BRUSH YOUR GUMS. Like, right about your teeth along the gumline. Be gentle when doing so, as too much force can cause microscopic cuts which can get infected.

When you're done, rinse with Listerine for exactly three minutes.

This is the NIGHT routine. In the mornings, floss, brush and use Listerine (but do NOT use Listerine more than twice a day). You DO NOT need to use the waterpik more than 3-4 times a week.

My dentist CONSTANTLY compliments me on my teeth when I go in for my routine cleaning and the last time I went his oral hygienist even lamented the lack of plaque on my teeth.

Flouride stops bacteria and algae and parasites from growing in and infesting the drinking water supply and all its hardware.

dentist again.

i didn't say that's the only reason, and fluoride is a GOOD thing. most people don't just go from no cavity to bam cavity. it's a progression - every day you eat sugar and your enamel softens and then your mouth cleanses and the enamel hardens again. this constant battle sometimes leads to cavities depending on your diet. brushing tips the scale back toward no cavities. fluoride chemically changes your teeth to make them harder - and hence makes it harder for cavities to form. so it all plays a role in reducing cavities.

some of the more extreme claims could well be false in an effort to discredit any argument against flouride, but the facts are
>it is a byproduct of many industries
>it is toxic and therefore expensive to dispose of
>it is dumped into water supplies in many areas and nations
>it calcifies in the body, arguably beneficial for bones and teeth but highly detrimental for eg the brain
>lumps of calcium buildup can prevent the pineal gland from functioning properly
>>
if nothing else, fluoride replaces the calcium in your bones. like your teeth. changing the calcium into fluorine.

hydroxyfluorite (fluorine) is much stronger than hydroxyapatite (calcium)

so just brush your teeth with fluoride, but rinse it out afterwards.

so humans can't handle a bit of fluoride despite most natural water that humans have been drinking for hundreds of thousands of years contain way more fluoride than 0.081 mg per 100 g (a 140 g potato contains 0.078 mg). you have to ingest 10 mg before you get any adverse effects.

It is. If people want fluoride, they can apply it to their teeth themselves. There is no need for every drop people drink to be fluoridated.

Leave it to the powers that be to distribute fluoride in the most inefficient and pollutive way possible.

you could drink 10 liters of water a day with no adverse effects from fluoride, you'd be flushing out electrolytes which is a problem, but that would be caused by the water itself.

fluoride doesn't pollute. even if you dump it straight into the ocean, sea water contains 1.1 mg/l fluoride on average while tap water contains 0.81 mg/l. if anything it's watering out the sea water.

I forget how much it was to have them pulled and have a set of dentures made. It had to be somewhere around 8-10k. I was poor as fuck at the time, parents bailed me out thankfully. I'm going for two lower implants and just a regular upper denture. All in on that is just shy of 11k. The quote I got for full implants (I think there would have been 5 or 6 total) was over 50k. Part of the reason that option was so high was that they would have had to reshape some of the upper jaw bone so they'd have a good surface to mount the implants to.
Like I said, take care of the teeth you've got.

animals don't need to brush because they dont eat a diet with any simple sugars.

if you literally consume no simple sugars, you wouldn't have to brush your teeth either.

the bacteria in your mouth break down sucrose, glucose, fructose into lactic acid.

if you consume complex sugars, even lactose which is in milk, the bacteria in your mouth cannot digest them. so no tooth decay.

perhaps you have more basic saliva. if your saliva can buffer the pH change from the bacteria in your mouth, then it won't cause any problems.

the issue is that once you get a cavity started, saliva has difficulty getting into the surface where the decay is happening, so the acid gets to fully react with your tooth.

basically, in acid, the chemicals making up your teeth dissolve and flow away.

so perhaps you have fewer acid-producing bacteria, or you have more basic saliva

if you were to swish orange juice in your mouth, and not drink any water for 30 minutes or so, you'd have pretty serious decay occurring. maybe experiment to see what the cause is.

>what are ionic compounds

>>767429091
also, a neat thing is that the enzyme your body produces to break down lactose (lactase enzyme) is upregulated if you consume more lactose. it takes a while, but your body alter the production of lactase depending on how regularly you consume lactose.

so, you could drink normal lactose-containing milk if you do it in small amounts and slowly ramp up. you just have to re-acclimate your body to consuming lactose regularly, and your body will produce more of the enzyme to break it down.
>>
>>767428675
That's not entirely true. You're right that sugars are compounding the problem, but plenty of animals eat fruit, so it can't be simple sugars that are the problem. The problem is compound sugars. Carbs. Pasta, bread, beer. A tiny bit of pasta on a tooth provides the same food for bacteria as a heap of sugar, but it sticks better.

At least that's my understanding. Could be more to it.

the problem is simple sugars, but you're not incorrect in saying carbohydrates are problems also.

fruit eating animals have different bone structure and saliva composition, as well.

but the thing about carbohydrates is that humans produce amylase in their saliva. amylase breaks down carbs into simple sugars, which the bacteria can ferment into lactic acid.

so carbs aren't strictly an issue if you rinse your mouth out after eating them, whereas simple sugars are immediately a problem because they will be digested by bacteria as soon as they come into contact with them.
>>

your example was dumb af. if you take a liter of water with ten spoons of salt and mix it with another liter of water that has only one spoon of salt the result you'll get is water that is less salty than the first liter and saltier than the second liter. which is what happens if you pour water with less fluoride into a body of water that has more fluoride.

your comparison would be the same as taking a liter of water with ten spoons of water and adding just a spoon of salt without any water. the result would be saltier water. so your comparison was stupid because it ignored the water that is mixed with the fluoride. it's depressing to have to explain to you how water works.

How? By bathing my teeth in orange juice for 30 minutes? How would I determine acute decay from this experiment? Wouldn't such exposure be dangerous to everyone's teeth, not just mine?

Admittedly, I rarely drink anything more than only mildly sour (be it acidic or alcaline). I imagine my teeth would start aching from that experiment.

Here's another little fun fact: when I was young and brushed my teeth regularly, my teeth were sensitive to cold (for example ice cream). This is no more the case. Could it be due to non-brushing?

the gas isn't relevant. hydrogen chloride is a gas too, but when it's dissolved in water it disassociates into ions. we're not talking about atomic fluorine, we're talking about ionic fluoride.

fluorine isn't an ion, fluoride is. elemental chlorine has different effects from ionic chloride in solution, as does fluorine and fluoride.

true. the only thing you'd find out is "hey my teeth are stronger" or "oh fuck my teeth are rotting" which isn't all that useful.

perhaps you could brush like half of your teeth and see if you can notice any difference in sensitivity, or decay, etc.

what country are you from? in the UK they have a product called "novamin" which is what they call a bioactive glass. it actually reacts with your teeth to form a literal surface of non-reactive glass on them, sealing the enamel from bacteria.

they don't sell it in america though, because toothpaste can only have one active chemical in it, which is typically fluoride.

That's fine. If you want to discuss the different effects it can have, that's worthwhile. But suggesting that something like fluoride can bio-accumulate like that, when there's zero evidence for it is stupid.

Bioaccumulation occurs when the body can't remove a certain chemical. There's a reason heavy metals are much more inclined to stick around in your system than gasses.
>>
>>767430229
>so your comparison was stupid because it ignored the water that is mixed with the fluoride
Except that it didn't. It was ridiculing the fact that it's okay to dump a bunch of chemicals in the ocean, because the chemical is already in the ocean. That doesn't mean it's good to add more, even if it is more diluted. That water will evaporate anyway as part of the water cycle.

what you say is totally correct. if you didn't have any bones, fluoride would pass through your body very quickly because it's water soluble. it has nowhere to be stored.

however, ionic fluoride displaces ionic calcium. as an example, in your bones. your bones are made of "hydroxyapatite" which has calcium in the chemical structure. fluoride reacts with hydroxyapatite in a displacement reaction, resulting in hydroxyfluorite. you then excrete the calcium.

your bones are constantly being broken down and reconstructed by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. when this happens, the hydroxyfluorite is decomposed and rebuilt with hydroxyapatite. the fluoride is then released into your bloodstream to be excreted, or reacts again to displace calcium.

so the issue is that the fluoride is stored in your bones over a relatively long period of time, and slowly excreted. so you get a relatively constant blood level of fluoride with regular exposure.

all that being said, it's not a big deal, and fluoridating water is probably a good thing, as well as using fluoride toothpaste. i'm just playing devils advocate here because your logic isn't 100% sound.

it's actually pretty fucking neat, the novamin. i'm studying chemical engineering with a biomolecular focus, and i've been researching bioactive glasses.

i've used the toothpaste before, and anecdotally when you brush your teeth you can actually feel a sort of crunchy grit before you spit it out. after using it for a week or so, your teeth get really slick and hard. you quit getting a filmy feeling on them when eating sugary foods. since it's a hard shell on your teeth, you don't have to actually use it all that often to preserve the layer once you've established it.

frankly it's going to be revolutionary in medicine as more bioactive glasses come out. they can use them to glue bones together, because the glass is inert and your body won't reject it.
>>
>>767431714
If you understand that, you must also realize that average tapwater concentrations of fluoride won't lead to that.

The person I was arguing with was acting like fluoride in tap water was like lead, and it just builds and builds. That's only the case if the concentration is too high, which it isn't in most places.

You have to also take into account the fluoride in dental products though. Admittedly I don't know much about biology but I was under the impression that any amount of fluoride indirectly leads to phosphate crystal formation in the pineal gland, which is something that isn't easily flushed out and leads to an accumulative effect correlating regular flouride consumption and depressed pineal gland function.

I found a research paper on the effects of fluoride on the pineal gland summarized here with source links if you are interested.
http://fluoridefree.org.nz/fluoride-interferes-pineal-gland-function/
I'm not able to effectively argue at this level of technicality, my knowledge of biology is gnereally limited to drugs and some neurotransmitters.

My gums bleed slightly on occasions when I brush teeth. Nothing painful and it goes away if I commit to brushing for several consecutive days. But of course I never do it.

I guess as long as you don’t smoke or drink much tea, your teeth will look fine right?

My teeth and gums are alright, I think. You might want to get your gums checked out though, that bread thing sounds pretty bad.

Hey gals - would you tongue kiss this guy?

They could look better but – cosmetic issues aside – are healthy. Not looking terribly either. But my standards may be low.

It’s only occasionally that they bleed but I still think you’re right. Even if the dentist only tells me to brush more often.

i just brush my teeth once a week if i remember. i usually drink soda before i go to sleep anyways so it wont make a difference

Could be better is fine. As long as you’re not self-conscious about anything is what matters.

Don't do this.

I really should be brushing...
I apparently have inflamed gums, and since I chew on one side of my mouth, I get plaque buildup on the opposite side. I rarely get cavities. Not flossing is a contributing factor.
I wash out my mouth with some kind of hexadine compound that stings and feels awful but if it helps my mouth, I don't care since it's just 30 seconds of mouthwashing.

brushing your teeth strips away the enamel and causes cavities, don't fall for (((dentistry)))
>>
>>767438437
But it also takes away the plaque.
I'll fall for chemistry instead. Fluoride in toothpaste bonds with enamel to make a stronger compound than regular, non-fluoride enamel. I don't brush because it's way top fuckin inconvenient.
If you don't swallow the toothpaste, you WILL be fine anyway.
